In the case of diabetes these people not only have to stay on a diet but they have to also eat their meals on time or else they will be victim to a miss function in their present insulin levels. So the dietitians recommend that diabetic patients should just intake a low level of fats and calories when dieting, and they should also make sure that they are consuming a large amount of fruits and vegetables plus the necessary items containing fiber.

The most vital thing in the actual diet of the diabetic is fruits and there are many ways for these foods to be included in your diet so you can be able to keep your blood sugar level under control. The specific fruits which you should eat are low in fiber content but high in dietary fibers, and it’s a real fact that most fruits are not good for diabetic patients as they tend to increase the blood sugar levels. So as a diabetic patient it is good to check out which fruits are the best fruits to be consumed constantly, and there are three fruits to be featured which are basically called super fruits in the case of a diabetic patient.

The first is the grapefruit and this is the best citrus fruit for people with diabetes, the next one is the jumbal and this is an Indian berry that is popular in diabetes treatment. The third fruit is the Goose berry and this is packed with vitamin C and drastically helps lower your blood sugar level.

The condition of diabetes is one that is a big burden for some people and they will go to many lengths to get this problem solved, but there is now a solution as there are there fruits to eat that will keep your diabetes under control. And the first thing a diabetic patient should remember is that the instance of medication alone cannot solve the problem as there are other avenues to be dealt with like certain foods which people consume.

So certain foods which have a high level of cholesterol or fat should not be consumed by you if you are a diabetic patient. And also the individual will need to be exercising regularly to keep the blood sugar level under control. Although sweet fruits can cause a serious problem for diabetic patients, but there are three fruits that can be consumed by a diabetic patient and these are jambul, apples and also grapefruits. The big decision to be made for both the patient and the physician is whether or not the intake of fruits can keep the individual’s blood sugar level under control. And it is very easy because just like how vegetables have certain amounts of fiber and carbohydrates to deal with the issue so does the vegetable.

The citrus family of fruits are good for the condition of diabetes as the contain the substance called pectin, this particular component is the one which helps in the process of transforming glucose into the blood stream. And the fruit called apple has vitamin b1 that helps deal with the issue of brain damage which is common in diabetes cases

More and more people who have diabetes are now looking for a natural cure. If you have type 2 diabetes then you may find some help. Unfortunately type 1 diabetes does not respond to any natural cures, Insulin is the only thing that can help.

Type 2, which is often known as late onset diabetes, because most people seem to contract the disease at forty or older. In some cases the disease can be controlled with diet or medication. However if left to its own devices, this illness can be devastating. Your doctor should always be notified of any changes. If you are prescribed medication always continue to take it.

If you are lucky enough to catch the disease in the early stages, then sometimes it can be reversed with natural aids.

These are all minerals and herbs that have been proven to help the fight against type 2 diabetes.

Magnesium. Found in many dark green vegetables and whole grains. Some nuts also contain magnesium. You an also buy it as part of a multi vitamin.

It has been thought to improve regulation of blood glucose. As with everything it is always better to eat a well balanced diet, than it is to take supplements.

Do not overdo any supplements if you do take them. It can have a negative result on your overall health, Chromium is another mineral that has been associated weight loss, and this of course can help diabetic patients. Chromium can also be found in good health shops and is often packaged with multi vitamins. Cinnamon has been known to reduce blood glucose level. Taken regularly it can have a very positive affect. Its a natural spice and has no nasty side effects.

Another plant extract that help reduce blood glucose is Ginseng. Just be careful and monitor your blood when taking these supplements. The last thing that you want is to let your glucose levels to drop too low. Always best to advise your doctor when taking anything new.

So if you have type 2 diabetes then there are a few things that you can experiment with, One of them may work for you.

What is blood sugar and why is it in the blood?
The term Blood Sugar refers to the simple sugar known as glucose, also called a mono-saccharide, meaning that in its chemical form it is a single molecule composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms. Glucose, as can be seen from its chemical formula, is a carbohydrate like all sugars and there are many different other sugars of varying complexity.

The sugar in the blood is obtained from the foods we eat, especially the carbohydrate foods such as breads, cereals, pastas, potatoes, fruits, and many others, that are typically part of our daily diet. The digestion process that takes place after eating, breaks down the carbohydrates to glucose which then passes into the blood stream to be delivered to organs and cells throughout the body that use the glucose as a source of energy.

Why is too much blood glucose dangerous?
While sugar, in the form of glucose, is an essential energy source for the body’s cells, too much glucose remaining in the blood stream for too long a period of time is associated with many serious health problems. The classic disease in which higher than normal blood sugars exist is diabetes, the complications of which are the major cause of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and blindness in America. According to the American Diabetes Association there are 24 million people in America who have diabetes.

What level of blood glucose is too high?
In the United States, blood glucose levels in the human body are measured using metric units of milligrams per deciliter. A milligram is one thousandth of a gram and a deciliter is one hundredth of a liter. Almost every other country measures blood sugars in millimoles per liter.

Without a blood test requisitioned by a doctor, individuals are unlikely to know whether their own glucose levels are above normal or not. And they do fluctuate throughout the day in response to foods eaten and physical exertion and as the blood cells convert glucose to fuel their metabolic activities. Blood sugar levels will be higher after meals and for the non-diabetic person, will usually return to the normal range of 64.8 and 104.4 milligrams per deciliter, usually expressed as mmg/dL.

Blood sugar levels are often relatively lower than normal after a night’s sleep, usually referred to as overnight fasting, and the breakfast meal serves to replenish the needed glucose supplies for the cells. However, if during the night the sugars begin to get too low, the body’s liver may come into action and initiate steps to provide a supply of glucose.

Anyone with persistently higher than normal blood sugar levels must be under the care and supervision of a doctor.

Living Diabetes means being aware of your blood sugar level, controlling it and what put it out of wack through evaluation, thought, and action. Because this is something not done by most people it can be seen as hard, especially when ‘tight’ control is required.

Blood sugar levels are typically automatically controlled by your body. As a person with diabetes, one must balance the intake of food and nutrition with the use of this energy through the use of exercise. With out regular exercise and high blood sugar levels, the circulatory system becomes brittle and broken, resulting in death of flesh in the extremities from lack of blood.

When one needs to control your diabetes with insulin injections, the amounts of insulin needed has to be calculated based upon the both the person’s blood sugar level (found with the use of a blood sample and a meter) and the amount of sugar-potential food eaten.

If the normal balance of blood sugar is not maintained, consequences include mental depression, lack of energy, high blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes, pain and numbness in hands and feet, inability to heal from wounds, and in the latter stages, amputation of extremities that no longer have sufficient blood circulation.

Conventional control of blood sugar levels include monitoring these levels before and after meals and adjusting the types and amounts of foods consumed accordingly. If you don’t exercise regularly, this control becomes more and more difficult as you use glucose less effectively on a cellular level. The human body is designed to use blood sugar (glucose) to provide energy to move – that is exercise. If this energy isn’t used, it must be stored (ultimately as fat) or flushed out in other destructive fashions, resulting in possible kidney and / or liver failure from over use.

Weight control is essential for people diagnosed with diabetes. Most type 2 diabetics are initially overweight – in fact a lot are obese. This connection occurs because the additional body mass requires more insulin (and additional fat makes it harder for the body to use insulin as well), which plays a major role in transporting blood sugar in and around cells, where it is converted to energy. This requirement for additional insulin is never quite caught up with by the pancreas in diabetic people, resulting in high blood sugar levels.

Exercise (raising a sweat at least 3 times a week, for 30 minutes each time) provides many health benefits on both large (macro) and small (micro) scale. In any person, diabetic or not, it’s been proven that exercise lengths a person’s lifespan.

On the large scale, exercise provides a person with more energy, make the joints in your skeleton work better – in short, provides an ability to do more things, think clearer as well. On the cellular scale, exercise makes the cell wall more porous, allowing insulin to move through it easier, transporting blood sugar out of the blood into the cells where it is used up.

Diet – the basic rule about diet and diabetes is two fold, eat what looks like it came from the ground, and eat less than you used to. Remove the following from your daily routine:

Manufactured food items. The more of man’s work that goes into a food product, the less nutritional value is in it can be a general rule. I know from my personal experience that crackers spike my blood sugar, taking a day or so to settle down.

Red meat: Don’t use much at all. Eating cow, pig, and chicken on a regular basis builds up unusable metabolic ‘ashes’ in the digestive system as well as increasing the acidity of your blood stream (more on acidity later).

Alcohol also causes all sorts of havoc in the body, both by breaking down in to sugar and then causing more acidity.

pH Optimization – this is the true key to avoiding diabetes, weight gain, and hypertension issues.

To do the business of life, cells need to be in an environment with very narrow parameters. We know about the need for ideal body temperature, fluid amount (most people are way too dry), and strong immune system. However, metabolism will not occur other than at 7.36 pH, slightly alkaline. The pancreas is the organ that controls the pH level in the body. When the requirements are too much for this organ to maintain required pH level, the body will manufacture fat cells to store acidic waste, which is the result of consuming the foods discussed.

Most people got type 2 diabetes by eating both too much and the wrong kinds of food. To change this and provide yourself with many years of active, happy life, you need to change the way you live – eat differently (using least processed food as possible), drink a lot more water than you are used to (1/2 your body weight in ounces), and exercise 3 times a week at least.

Diabetes is related to the impaired glucose lenience of the body, and hence insulin execution is exaggerated. Symptoms of diabetes can be too much thirst, extreme hunger or unnecessary / numerous urination.

Diabetes can be of two types. Type 1 or Type 2. It can be due to pancreas disorder or gestational diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is due to the low creation of insulin, which is very hard to control with yoga exercises. Type 2 diabetes can be easily controlled due to yoga exercises because it is mainly caused by stressed life style.

Another exercise for persons afflicted from diabetes is Sun Salutation. It increases blood supply to different parts of body and thus improving insulin management in the body, which is giving all the profit of exercise if accomplished at four rounds in a minute. If adept at unhurried speed, it offers the profits of asana.

Asanas:

The main Asanas are Dhanurasana, Yoga mudra, Halasana, Matsyasana, Sarvangasana, Ardhamatsyendrasana, and Pavan muktasana etc. These Asanas are beneficial in cure of diabetes. Key characteristic of Asanas is steadiness and calm skill in the position. After reaching to the position, person has to calm down all the muscles and attempts to uphold the positions for long time stretches, twists and strains in the body, and hence the inner organs are also getting strained and stretched. This exercise will improve the blood circulation automatically and oxygen supply to the organ is also increasing the efficiency and functioning of the organ.

Pranayamas:

There are eight types of Pranayama like Nadi Shodhan, Bhramari and Bhasrika Kapalbhati are the main pranayam for diabetes. The essential planning for Pranayama’s is to rotate the nostril inhalation. This type is found useful in diabetes as it has calming effect on nervous system, which decreases stress levels, serving in diabetes treatment.

Meditation:

Meditation is especially useful in executing of stress.

Yoga Nidra:

Yoga Nidra is the most significant course of relaxation. It helps in lightening the stress and has positive property on the whole body and mind.

Diabetes is a metabolic problem.

The explanation is this, it is an action of converting food that we eat and changing that into energy. It also relates to the storage and distribution of that energy throughout the body. How well this storage and distribution system works with your body determines how well your body works. If all is not working correctly, often the energy is stored as fat in the wrong places.

We can blame our genes, we can blame our mothers, we can blame our spouse, we can blame our kids to no avail, and we must accept responsibility for our diabetes.

Some experts’ say this metabolic disorder is inherited, but is fatness inherited; We know it is caused by what we eat. Some experts say it can be hard to diagnose by doctors, obesity, high blood pressure cholesterol or diabetes, I can’t help but wonder what the doctor is doing or thinking, maybe getting paid, after all he doesn’t want to lose a paying customer.

Those same experts say that once the doctor has it figured out he/she might suggest a self care program through a life style change. Now that is a great idea.

What really is happening is that the insulin made in the pancreas in unable to do its job with the food that has been ingested therefore the food becomes insulin resistant and when that happens you blood sugar levels rise. When you have very high blood sugar level you can go into a coma and you can go to sleep for ever. RIP.

Let’s investigate the terrible foursome:

Obesity: We know what causes obesity, we can see that we weigh more than the people around us and that firstly has to be a signal. We do compare ourselves in every way with our fellow man. Even the guys when they go into the urinal they check out the other guys and compare. A well dressed man or woman always stands out in the crowd and you must compare your size and looks to them. It is even better if you have a beautiful face without acne pits all over it.

To judge if we are medically within our limits we can look to the BMI or Body Mass Index. There are a number of web sites that can help you figure that out but a body mass index between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered normal. One such site is operated by the US Department of Health & Human Services. There are others but this does have a body mass index program to see how fat you really are.

Cause of obesity is usually eating too much of the wrong foods

High Blood Pressure: The normal blood pressure for most people is referred to as 120 over 80 written 120/80. Anything over 139/89 is considered pre hypertension/high blood pressure and anything over 140/90 is considered high blood pressure.

Cause of high blood pressure is usually eating too of the wrong foods. Stress just aggravates it.

Cholesterol: Now, what is cholesterol, really? It is made in our liver in adequate supplies to produce sex hormones and assist in the digestive process. Cholesterol is made up of good and bad things called Triglycerides some good, some bad. When we have too much of the bad stuff it makes our blood thicker and it sticks to the arteries and veins of our body. Our poor heart has trouble pumping that thick stuff around the body and it is unable to push the blood into certain areas.

Cause of high blood pressure is usually eating too much of the wrong foods.

Diabetes: Now with all these problems combined, comes diabetes. The food we eat in not able to accept the insulin our insulin made by the pancreas allowing the sugar levels to rise to a dangerous level.

Cause of Diabetes is usually eating too much of the wrong foods.

Do you want to solve the problem…….EASY……? Stop eating all the crap that you have been shoveling in your mouth and make a lifestyle change

Come and read the secret………. No more things that contain sugar, no more refined carbohydrates, limit your meat intake to 10% very lean. Eat anything that is grown in the ground.

How to maintain blood sugar level chart at home is the most frequently asked question by most diabetics. As this is a task that every diabetic has to perform for monitoring blood glucose level.

Maintaining blood sugar level at home is the vital part of diabetes treatment. It is strongly advocated by the physicians all around the world. Most endocrinologists recommend to buy a home blood glucose meter and try to make them teach how to perform a blood sugar level test.

Further the physicians strongly recommend that accuracy of glucose readings measured at home depends upon various variables. It is extremely important that diabetic must first carefully read the instructions from the manual supplied with particular blood glucose monitor. Following instructions faithfully ensures accuracy of blood sugar level chart. The blood test must be carried out using proper technique and the blood glucose meter must be properly calibrated.

Readings carried out at home are thought to be correct if they fall in the range of 20% variance when compared with the laboratory blood sample. This variance is because of the reason that laboratory test are performed on plasma extract of blood sample whereas the home tests are carried out on the whole sample. Modern diabetic testing supplies are even more sensitive and check the blood samples within 5% variance range.

If the sugar readings are extremely low it is good to check for the signs of hypoglycemia. The signs include confusion, lethargy, inattention, lack of coordination and shakiness. It is important to give patient something sweet like some candy or honey. This comes in emergency treatment of diabetes. After relieving the signs of low blood sugar, one must contact his physician to adjust the diabetes medication and diet plan.

Some blood testing strips are more evident and the testing area must never be touched by mistake during handling.

The testing strips must be taken out from box with care just few seconds before the actual use. The strips must never be exposed to humidity or high temperature. The expiry date must be checked with care. The strips must be only used with prescribed meter to ensure the code on the strip container matches with the number coded on the machine.

There could be the following reason s of incorrect readings

The glucometer is dirty

The meter is damaged or being dropped from height

The gloucometer had been stored in high temperature conditions

The solution would have expired

Diabetes mellitus or simply termed as diabetes has three distinct forms. These are type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes.

Type 1 Diabetes

Also known as, juvenile diabetes is an insulin-dependent condition that results from the destruction of beta cells in pancreas that produces the insulin. The main source of energy for all cells is glucose that in turn needs insulin necessary for glucose to get into cells used for producing the energy. The subsequent deficiency of insulin may lead to greater blood and urine glucose. Hence, classical symptoms of frequent urination or polyuria, increased thirstiness (polydipsia), increased hunger (polyphagia) and weight loss may often experienced of the person with this type of diabetes.

The cause of this Type 1 diabetes is mostly due to environmental factors and genetic endowment. This means that the prevalence of the disease comes from many different genes that contribute to its expression.

Type 2 Diabetes

This type of diabetes is a lifelong illness characterized by high levels of glucose in the blood. It is mostly common and usually occurs on the adult stage. When you have type 2 diabetes, the body specifically fats, liver and muscle cells do not respond correctly to insulin. What actually happens is there is insulin resistance in which insulin becomes less efficient in lowering blood sugars. As a result, there is no energy stored since blood sugar does not get into cells leading to abnormally high levels of sugar build-up in the blood. This abnormality is often termed as hyperglycemia. This at many times activates the pancreas to create a lot of insulin but is not sufficient to supply the demand of the body. For most cases, fat interferes with the ability of the body to utilize insulin that is why obese people are prone to have the tendency to insulin resistance. However, thin ones are not an exception especially the older ones since they can also develop type 2 diabetes.

Low activity level, poor dietary management and over weight are potential grounds for developing type 2 diabetes. In addition, if your family has had history of this disease you will likely inherit the same.

Gestational Diabetes

GDM is a condition in which women who do not show signs of diabetes before pregnancy demonstrates high levels of blood glucose during gestation period. It is sometimes closely associated with type 2 diabetes since it is also insulin resistance. According to studies, about 3-10% of the population is affecting pregnant women to have gestational diabetes. The hormone produced during the maternity period may probably a contributing factor to increase a woman’s insulin resistance resulting to impaired glucose tolerance.

Mothers who have gestational diabetes are highly at risk of developing type 2 diabetes after giving birth. Babies on the other hand are more likely to develop childhood obesity, low blood sugar and jaundice. Later as the child grows, they may acquire type 2 diabetes if blood sugar is not adequately controlled. Dietary modification, exercise, insulin treatment and self-care are very important to decrease the risk of getting a more serious illness.

Living alone with diabetes could be very challenging, especially considering the fact that the individual’s health could fluctuate from time to time. Usually there is the possibility of the individual suffering from either hypoglycaemia or hyperglycaemia, if his condition is not properly monitored and controlled.

These two problems that the patient is likely to face, makes it particularly challenging if he lives alone, with no one to help should there be any emergency. The person needs therefore, to be extremely careful how he goes about his activities of daily living, so as not to be caught napping by these problems.

In order to successfully live alone with this problem, the individual needs to equip himself with the following guidelines:

1. Must be able to take and interpret readings: Ability to test urine samples and interpret the results helps the individual to understand when there is a change in his blood glucose level. This knowledge is needed to enable him understand when to seek medical assistance before a complication sets in. It also helps him to know if the drugs he is taking are actually controlling the disease or not.

2.	Be familiar with signs and symptoms: The individual also needs to be familiar with the signs and symptoms of his condition, and the warning signs of an impending danger. The warnings would always remind him of what needs to be done in order to prevent a major problem. For instance, he has to understand that tremor, nervousness, headache and hunger, are some of the warning signs of hypoglycaemia; and that he needs to take his meals or some cubes of sugar to prevent it immediately.

3.	Have his drugs/glucose available: He also needs to have his drugs readily available in case he needs to take them. There are times when he needs to take his insulin for example, to prevent hypoglycemia. It could be very dangerous if he suddenly realizes he has run out of drugs when there is an impending crisis. Besides, he should have some glucose available, which he might need should he over work himself or mistakenly take an overdose of insulin, or when he discovers he has some of the warning signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia.

4.	Eat prescribed diet: The individual needs to faithfully adhere to the prescribed food regimen, since they help to put his condition under control.

5. Exercise/work in moderation: He should understand that he lives alone, and that over working or over-exercising himself could pose a danger to his health. He should therefore watch his level of work or exercise, knowing full well that help may not readily come should he become exhausted or go into hypoglycaemic coma.

6.	Protect his extremities: He must prevent injuries to his extremities by protecting them. He should always wear good fitting shoes to prevent cuts to his toes or feet, which could become infected and gangrenous if not properly handled. He may find it difficult to cope with such problem since he lives alone.

7.	Have his doctor’s phone number: He must have his doctor’s phone number in case he needs to call him if there is any problem.

When these rules or guidelines are followed, it becomes easier for one to live alone with diabetes, without necessarily endangering his life.

Damaged glucose tolerance or weakened fasting blood sugar is also known as pre-diabetes. It is an ailment which is treatable wherein the glucose levels in the blood are elevated, but not elevated enough to cause diabetes. When someone has pre-diabetes, he/she is more probable to get diabetes type II and several causes of diabetes in the body may happen throughout pre-diabetes. If somebody has pre-diabetes, there are plenty of ways to control blood sugar levels to remain physically fit and healthy.

Generally, pre-diabetes has no signs and can be identified only by the physician by means of A1C laboratory examination, a glucose acceptance test through the mouth or abstained plasma glucose examination. If you have observed the following signs like severe hunger or thirst, fatigue, loss of weight, frequent urination, recurrent infections, blurred vision or sores which do not heal, go to your doctor immediately and ask for medical advices.

A1C test for hemoglobin measures the sugar scales in the blood for within the past 2 to 3 months. The proportion of sugar which is found in the protein content of the red cells in the blood which transmit oxygen is measured. If the proportion ranges from 6 – 6.5, pre-diabetes is present in your body. Fasting plasma sugar examination measures sugar levels in the blood after abstaining for food or anything by mouth overnight. If the levels range from 100 to 125 mg/deciliter, then you are suffering from pre-diabetes. The oral glucose acceptance examination measures sugar scale in the blood after fasting overnight. Sugary solution is taken two hours after and then test is done again for blood sugar. If the sugar scale ranges from 140 to 199, you are suffering from diabetes.

If someone has risk factors which include of having members of the family suffering from diabetes, having elevated blood pressure, being overweight, being smokers, high or low cholesterol levels, high triglycerides, heavy utilization of alcohol and acquiring diabetes in time of pregnancy. Anybody having polycystic ovary disorder must be examined every year.

Pre-diabetes is curable and easy to treat. You can avoid from acquiring pre-diabetes by means of doing exercises; thirty to sixty minutes of exercise every day. Prevent from smoking and limit use of alcohol. Avoid processed, sugary and fatty food and drinks and also eat little portion sizes. Above all, eat healthy diet which includes fruit, whole grain, dried beans, fish, non-starchy vegetables, lean meat and dairy without fat. If you follow these healthy lifestyles pre-diabetes will be prevented and treated as well.

The doctor may prescribe medications to reduce blood sugar, if pre-diabetes is persistent. Glucophage or Precose can be given to lower blood sugar level. Low-dose aspirin is also given to safeguard your heart. Elevated blood sugar and cholesterol medications can also be prescribed.

Loss of weight can help you more in managing diabetes. Diabetes if not treated results to many complications like cardiovascular or heart ailments which have been proven to be deadly. The good information is that diabetes onset can be avoided or delayed by good management. Excellent management is done by means of early detection of risk issues in pre-diabetes period and also healthy lifestyles focused on exercise and diets.

Lower blood sugar levels, weight loss, and stopping type 2 diabetes and it’s complications in it’s tracks, is something anyone diagnosed with this condition often hopes for. Like many diseases or conditions, type 2 diabetes is caused by our genes and our personal environment, in other words our lifestyle. Now what does all this mean: it means we cannot change our genes but we can control whether or not the effect of these genes is activated. In other words you are in control; it is possible to lower blood sugar levels and reverse type 2 diabetes.

There is a way to beat or reverse type 2 diabetes… and guess what, it can be done naturally with no side effects. You must have heard all this before… but this time we will go into more details. Yes, you guessed it correctly, the way to do this is through lifestyle changes. Now let’s delve into the specifics involved.

When lifestyle changes are mentioned, there are concepts involved. Each one involves a change in your habits which can be difficult… it’s really a long-haul proposition. You need to set both short-term and long-term goals for yourself and then move forward at your own pace.

First one on the agenda is weight management.

a) This is only easy if you put your mind to it. It is eating healthily and exercising adequately.

We all know that exercise is essential and thirty minutes a day will do it. Actually exercise is like insulin to your body! This coupled with eating healthily will lead to successful weight loss. It’s easy to fall into the TV dinner diet trap… this is where you eat the TV dinner and then still feel hungry, and so you eat more.

Do you know if you cook for yourself, you are often ahead of the game? If you cook you have control over all the ingredients in your meals. You can substitute healthier ingredients, use less sugar and control portion size.

b) Keeping a food and beverage journal also helps for reference to blood sugar level comparisons. Keep a record of your exercise level each day also.

c) It is also wise to find out why you eat too much. Sometimes eating is triggered by boredom, anger, loneliness, stress and other emotions.

d) After your emotional issues have been addressed, there are lifestyle priorities for achieving weight loss and lower blood sugar levels:

eating several small meals at regularly timed intervals rather than infrequent large meals. Your pancreas has to produce insulin every time you eat in proportion to the amount you eat at each sitting.

eating less fat will help but replacing it with more fat-free foods is not the way to go because some fat-free foods are rich in calories

reduce or eliminate sweetened or naturally sweetened beverages. This includes regular soda, fruit punch and natural fruit juices

weight training will help lose more weight, and gaining muscle is one way to help burn calories and also to lower blood sugar levels

keeping active will help stabilize your blood sugar levels and get rid of the risk factors that can lead to diabetes, high blood pressure, bad cholesterol levels and all kinds of diseases

exercising regularly has benefits… it helps improve glucose transport and metabolism. It almost immediately improves your muscles’ sensitivity to insulin, making it easier to store sugar in your muscles rather than have it rise in your circulation

including fiber satisfies hunger plus blunts the rise in your blood sugar levels and it also lowers your cholesterol levels

Foods to eat sparingly include:

high glycemic foods

fruit juices… eat fruit instead

artificial sweeteners… some research shows they stimulate your appetite

coffee and caffeine

alcoholic beverages… limit yourself to one or two drinks a week. Alcoholic drinks can stimulate your appetite

soft drinks and soda… drink herbal teas and water

Eating these foods can stall your weight loss or lead to weight loss plateaus.

2. Stress

Eating when you are stressed is not great for your body. When your stress level is high, your body is in flight or fight mode. Then your parasympathetic nervous system, which controls digestion, shuts down. When stressed your pleasure sensing abilities disappear.

3. Supplements

Drugstores and health food stores are stocked with shelf after shelf of them. If you are adding supplements that might affect your blood sugar levels, be sure to check your blood sugars regularly.

take most supplements with or immediately after a meal

take one new product at a time

some natural supplements contain potent chemicals that can interfere with absorption or other medications you might be taking

In people with type 2 diabetes, supplemental alpha-lipoic acid appears to increase insulin sensitivity and reduce symptoms of nerve damage. Chromium is what is called an insulin cofactor… an insulin helper. Although correcting chromium deficiencies is essential for blood sugar control, it is not yet clear whether adding extra chromium helps, or if it is safe to do so.

Chronic diseases like diabetes can prove to be extremely serious in the long run. These kinds of ailments are considered to be silent killers, because although you may be having many complications, you are not really aware of them unless you are monitoring your blood pressure and your blood sugar levels on very regular basis. There are some people that need to have very strong medicines in order to keep their ailments under control, however, there are those that do not really have very constant symptoms and that can actually forget about their condition, and this can be very dangerous in the long run.

It is therefore very important to follow a very strict routine when it comes to checking your blood sugar levels and there are things like the sugar level test strips that can help you very easily keep track of your ailment. If for some reason you find a test that seems to be too much on the higher side or on the lower side and you don’t really feel that you are having any glucose problems at the present moment, it is good to check whether you have left the strips exposed for too long, of that your meter is coded properly. Diabetes supplies are normally very accurate; however, you will have to take into consideration that all machinery needs to have a certain level of maintenance and support to be able to give you the best possible results.

Of course, you can also find a vast variety of glucose monitors in the market these days. However, it is important that you are comfortable with the way how the monitor functions, and that is perhaps the most important factor that you will need to consider. Most diabetes supplies are very simple to use, however, there are some machines that you don’t seem to understand at all, not because the machines don’t work, but because you are finding them too complicated to handle, and therefore, it is important that you find something that suits your technological skills properly.

Of course, the technology of Blood glucose monitors is also changing every year and you are now able to find those monitors that you can adapt to your computer and you can store your reports in your computer for further references, and this is something that many doctors will advice you in doing, as keeping a proper record of your glucose levels over a long period of time will give you a very good idea of your present condition.

Choosing the best diabetes supplies for your present condition is a very important part of the ailment management program and you should not compromise on costs and quality when this is concerned.

Are diabetic supplements better than drug medications? There is nothing wrong to try homeopathic treatment. This is because the ingredients are 100% pure natural and organic. We are all very much aware that before the modern medicine came to being, herbal medicine had been used and had been useful to men.

Mother earth has abundantly given us natural resources that we can use to treat many health problems. Take note of several herbs, spices and other vegetation that have potent substances to significantly improve the condition of the diabetic person. Because of the clinical and scientific facts, experts can boldly recommend some natural remedies.

But before you rush to any health shop in your place, you need to consider a few important things first. There are questions that were raised concerning the supplement which also make sense. Questions like: What type of diabetes patient can take this food supplement? What are the substances found in the supplement that prove its effectiveness? What are the forms of dietary supplements for diabetic patients?

Now, we know that there are three major types of diabetes: Type 1 diabetes- a type that happens to kids, Type 2 diabetes- common diabetes that middle-aged or adult people have, and the Gestational diabetes- a temporary type of diabetes that happens to pregnant women. However, people diagnosed with pre-diabetes are considered in the seemingly called red alert condition because they have a higher level of glucose which any time can be developed to Type 2.

For these three major types of diabetes, it is suggested that you consult first your doctor before taking any diabetes supplement. Tell your doctor about the stuff that you are planning to take as your food supplement. People with pre-diabetes can take the full advantage of food supplement because it can help them have their blood sugar level at bay.

So what are the common ingredients found in diabetes food supplements? Some supplements are combinations of many different ingredients. Some are simply made from one product, which means it contains only one ingredient. Example of that is the bitter melon or bitter gourd. This dietary supplement contains the super-finely grinded dried bitter melon’s leaves which are placed in capsules. Bitter melon is an excellent hypoglycaemic agent. It is very powerful in decreasing the level of glucose. It contains Charantin that act as an active substance in treating diabetes symptoms. Other individual ingredients in a supplement are the Gingko biloba, Ginseng, Gymnema, and others.

Some dietary supplements are made up of two or more components. The usual tandem is the garlic and onion. These two ordinary spices are effective in preventing diabetic symptoms. The Allicin, an essential nutrient found in these spices, is also helpful in controlling the blood sugar in your system. Some supplements for diabetics are combination of either of these herbs and other products like cinnamon, mushroom, fenugreek, broccoli, kidney beans, dried basil, cayenne, dandelion and other organic elements.

There are so many kinds of food supplements that people with diabetes can ingest. They may come in capsules, gels, liquids and pills. They only have to make sure that the supplements that they will buy contain genuine organic ingredients. Make sure it has no toxic substances in the components. As a general rule, always check the label and look for the FDA approved symbol in any diabetic supplements.

I’m assuming that you’re reading this diabetes diet article for one simple reason. You (or a loved one) have diabetes or a family history of diabetes and you want to find a healthy diet for diabetes that will help you manage the condition more effectively. Maybe you’d like to reduce your reliance on medication. Perhaps you’re hoping to avoid having to resort to drugs in the first place. Maybe you simply want a diabetes diet plan that will allow you to do everything in your power to keep your blood sugar under control and to keep serious health problems at bay.

No matter what your situation, if you have Type 2 diabetes, there is a lot you can do to help you to tame it.

By following some healthy diabetes diet tips you’ll be able to lose some weight and also boost your cells’ ability to respond to insulin.

If you have Type 2 diabetes, your primary goal is simple: to bring your blood sugar levels under control. By doing so, you’ll help to stave off diabetes-related complications that can compromise your quality of life, such as serious eye and kidney problems; you can reduce your risk of heart disease (did you know that people with diabetes have two to four times the normal risk of heart disease and stroke?); and you’ll most likely live longer. Best of all, you will soon feel better both physically and mentally and more in control of your day-to-day health.

How to lower blood sugar levels is another matter entirely, and one that can seem anything but simple.

Medications can achieve this, of course, and you may need to be on some. But there are many more measures that you can take to control your diabetes and slow its progression, starting with changing your diet.

There are countless different ways to regulate your diet, from simple healthy eating to choosing the foods you eat according to their Glycaemic Index ratings. But we don’t think you should have to research each and every food before you eat it.

Taking charge of diabetes doesn’t have to be all that complicated. In fact, it shouldn’t be, because the more complicated a piece of advice is, the less likely you are to follow it. Approaches that involve a lot of time, attention and planning can be difficult to stick with permanently.

The truth is that all you really need to do to achieve a radical change in your health is to make a few small changes in some of your everyday habits, such as what you eat for lunch or what you do during the commercial breaks on TV. How can such small changes possibly add up to controlling diabetes?

Lowering your blood sugar levels is reason enough to lose weight for someone with diabetes. But shedding surplus pounds may also help to relieve or prevent a multitude of secondary health problems, including

High blood pressure

Heart disease

Stroke

Gallbladder disease

Joint pain

Sleep apnea

Arthritis

Breast cancer

Colon cancer

Prostate cancer

Kidney cancer

Diabetes is a very common and serious condition. There are millions of people who are already suffering from it around the world and many more will be diagnosed in the years to come. The rates of diabetes are continuing to rise, what with the rates of obesity soaring. Obesity or a lack of physical activity is just one of the main causes of this condition. There are so many more people these days than ever before who are eating unhealthily and who are not being active.

This has resulted in a major upturn and a skyrocket in the rates of diabetes. The diabetes effects can be devastating, especially to people who are living with diabetes and do not even know it. People often have diabetes but do not realize it either because the symptoms are so general or they may not have any symptoms. To avoid the diabetes effects, one of the most important things any person can do is learn more about the condition. That includes what the warning signs are and what treatments are available.

Symptoms To Watch For

Especially if you are overweight and not active you are at high risk for developing this condition and will want to watch out for diabetes symptoms even more, to avoid potentially dangerous diabetes effects. There are a few main symptoms that you should be able to recognize. That includes increased thirst, more frequent urination, fatigue, weight loss, excessive eating and poor wound healing.

If you notice one or more of these symptoms and especially if it persists so you know it is not associated with a cold or flu, you will want to get in to see your doctor right away. Let them know what symptoms you have been experiencing and they will perform a few routine tests to determine whether or not you have diabetes.

Doctors are very avid with patients who have diabetes and as soon as they find out a patient has diabetes they will get to work on finding treatment as soon as possible, to avoid any dangerous diabetes effects.

Doctors use the type of diabetes the person is suffering from to be the main deciding factor in which type of treatment is going to be most suitable for a particular patient. In type 1 diabetes for instance, the person’s body is actually not producing any insulin at all. Therefore insulin must be provided into the body in order to manage the blood sugar levels properly.

Lifelong treatment is required for type 1 diabetes patients, to keep their condition under control and ensure they are not in any danger. Most type 1 diabetes patients will need to take several insulin injections a day just to control their blood sugar levels. An insulin pump can also work and you will want to talk to your doctor about this to learn about your options and figure out what is going to work best for you.

All diabetes patients have to manage their blood sugar levels if they want to avoid diabetes effects, and make sure they are not getting out of control. Eating healthily and getting lots of exercise is also important because this aids in the process of controlling blood sugar levels and avoid negative diabetes effects. You will be given a home blood sugar meter to use on your own to keep track of your blood sugar levels and make sure they are not getting out of control.

Exercise is important not only to keep you in shape and prevent you from becoming overweight, but also because it helps the body to use insulin more effectively. With type 2 diabetes treatment is different and in this case it is more about making a change to the patient’s eating and exercise plans to keep them healthy.

Always consult your doctor before using this information.

Diabetes mellitus classification
It has two categories, they are:

diabetes 1 and

diabetes 2

Type 2 has two other sub types, they are:

gestational and

pre-diabetes

“Diabetes 1″ is also being called as childhood-onset, juvenile, and insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). Likewise, “diabetes 2″ is also being called as adult-onset, obesity-related, and non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM).

Diabetes 1
It is characterized by loss of the insulin producing beta cells in the pancreas which leads to insulin deficiency. The majority of type 1 is of beta cell loss by autoimmune attack. There is no known preventive measure against type 1, which causes approximately 10% of cases. It can affect children or adults but was previously termed “juvenile or childhood-onset diabetes” because it represents a majority of the cases in children.

Diabetes 2
It is characterized by insulin resistance which may be combined with relatively reduced insulin secretion. The improper utilization or sensitivity of body tissues to insulin is believed to involve the insulin receptor. However, the specific defects are not known, but excess fat deposits in the muscle cell are assumed to be the cause. It is the most common one.

In the early stages, the abnormality in insulin sensitivity can be overcome by medication that improve insulin sensitivity or reduce the production of glucose by liver. As the disease progresses, due to low level of insulin secretion a therapeutic replacement of insulin often becomes necessary.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM)
It is a sub class of type 2, involving a combination of relatively inadequate insulin secretion and insulin sensitivity. It occurs in about 2%-5% of all pregnancies and mostly it will disappear after delivery. About 20%-50% of all gestational women develop type 2 later in their lives. Even though it may be transient, untreated gestational can cause health issues for both the fetus and mother. Risks to the baby include high birth weight and breathing difficulties after delivery.

Pre-diabetes
It indicates a condition that occurs when a person’s blood glucose level is higher than normal but not high enough to diagnose as diabetes 2. Many people diagnosed as 2 may spend many years in a state of pre-diabetes.

Diabetes in children is a disease that is severe in nature but can be managed through medication, use of insulin injection or healthy lifestyle of your choice. This is the result if the body is not able to regulate blood sugar levels by itself. It is caused by lack of enough insulin, a hormone which breaks down and changes glucose into the blood. Diabetes mellitus (type II diabetes) and diabetes insipidus (type I diabetes) are the two kinds of diabetes. Type I diabetes is the kind that attack children.

Common symptoms that can be seen in children with diabetes are thirst, loss of weight, headaches, frequent urination, pain in the abdomen and problems in behavior.

In order not to acquire diabetes in children, high blood sugar level must be prevented. Hyperglycemia, high blood sugar happens if the sugar (glucose) level goes up above normal. It is difficult to maintain the level of the child because of the speedy growth during teen years.

Elevated readings tend to increase gradually, usually in a period of hours or days. But if you take large meals or skip insulin dose it will increase rapidly (typically within a few hours). Gradual elevation in blood sugar can make someone tired and thirsty. Continued elevation can cause harm in the heart, eyes, kidneys, blood vessels and nerves. If the blood sugar of your child goes on raising like his or her kidneys increase the production of urine, dehydration will occur. It is risky because he or she will suffer coma and eventually dies when your child becomes dehydrated severely.

There are three steps that could assist you to get rid of problems in high blood sugar:

1. Regularly, test the blood sugar level of your child especially in the duration of illnesses. The symptoms of high blood sugar level like fatigue, increase in urination and thirst are not seen in every child.

2. Consult your doctor whenever there is a frequent elevation in the readings or when the level stays consistently above normal range.

3. To prevent dehydration, advice your child to take extra water or non-caffeinated and drinks that are sugar-free.

Special Child Diabetic Care -
It is very important to have a regular monitor of blood sugar. The most appropriate times are during meals and at night before going to sleep. Normal scale of blood glucose is 80 to 120. If you have elevated reading, insulin is needed to bring down the level. Eating carbohydrates and proteins are needed to ensure that your level will go up, if your blood glucose level is below the scale of 80. Change in diet or medication or even insulin scale, is needed when your blood glucose fluctuates. This is the reason why checking up the blood glucose regularly is very important.

Annual examination of the eyes is needed if you are diabetic. Diabetic retinopathy is a severe condition if not stopped will lead to blindness. The small blood vessels in the eyes erupt or burst if you have diabetic retinopathy. Visiting the ophthalmologist is necessary to check your eyes also.

Make sure the good circulation of the lower extremities especially the legs and feet. You can use special shoes and socks to aid you. Be aware of some sores that will develop in your feet. There is a tendency for diabetic patients for slow healing and the sores will lead to cutting of toes, feet and even legs.

Another side effect of diabetes in children is kidney problem and if this happens it will require dialysis. All of these can be prevented if you maintain the normal level of your blood glucose by eating healthy and continue to exercise regularly and have a healthy lifestyle.

Type 2 Diabetes has become an epidemic in our society. Hereditary and poor lifestyle habits are frequently to blame. The good news about Type 2 Diabetes, which is different from the autoimmune disease Type 1 Diabetes, is that lifestyle changes can dramatically improve your diabetes control.

Top Three Tips to Better Blood Sugars

1. Know your medications and take them correctly!

Talk with your doctor, health care team, and pharmacist about your medications. Learn what the purpose of the medicine is and why it was prescribed. Learn what effect the medicine is to provide. And most importantly, learn how you are supposed to take it and remember to take each day as prescribed.

This is especially important if you are taking insulin. There are different types of insulins, from short-acting to long-acting. It is very important to know how your insulin works. Lantus, for example, works for 24 hours and is used as a “basal” insulin, which keeps your blood sugars steady over the day. It is not used for when you suddenly have a high blood sugar reading that you need to correct. I recently had a patient who had a high number and decided she must need to take some insulin. Instead of taking her corrective dose of 6 units of short-acting insulin Humalog, she took her long-acting Lantus and gave herself 60 units! She did not understand the readings on her insulin syringe. Insulin can be dangerous when not taken correctly so make sure you understand how to take it, and ask questions at the doctor’s office and let them know you need more education.

2. Lose Weight if you are overweight and Control Your Carbohydrates!

Even a small 10% drop in your weight can dramatically improve your blood sugars. Rather than going on a fad diet, ditch the dieting concept and instead start taking small steps each day to cut back on calories and make long-term lifestyle changes. Learn to stop eating when full, not skip meals, balance the amount of carbohydrates at each meal, and pay attention and become aware of why you are eating.

Carbohydrates cause your blood sugars to rise, but they are still needed by your body for energy and other functions. Learning to limit your carbohydrate intake, but not eliminate it, and choose healthier carbs can improve your blood sugars and help with weight loss. Typical carbohydrate intake for females at each meal is 30-60 grams, while men is 45-75 grams, depending on your weight and weight loss goals.

3. Incorporate Exercise and extra steps into your day!

Not only can exercise help with weight loss, it helps lower blood sugars. Most people hate exercise and do not take time for it. Instead of thinking of exercise as a chore, think of the benefits exercise provides. Exercise helps with stress relief and gives you more energy. Think about what benefits you get from exercise to remind yourself to keep doing it. Choose activities you enjoy and start building them into your routine. Start slowly and aim to move more. You could park further away from the store and walk, get up and change the tv rather than use the remote, take the stairs, etc. Pedometers are great at helping you keep track of your steps. The ultimate goal is to work up to 10,000 steps a day.

Start today with one goal.

You do not have to change everything at once. In fact, people who choose small steps usually do better long-term. How many times have you started a new diet and then quit? It was probably too overwhelming. Instead, choose one thing you are willing to do that would make a difference, such as take my medicine each day, learn about my medicine this week, walk for 10 minutes after dinner twice this week, cut my carb intake or portions in fourth or half at lunch, etc. Write down your goal and put a checklist in a prominent place. Those checked off days are great motivators and a great start to changing your habits!

Many people don’t really give their diet much thought at all. They go from meal to meal with no definite plan in mind. If a food comes their way, they will eat it. If they get hungry, they won’t stop to consider what might be the best decision for what should go into their mouth.

This is a form of slow suicide.

If you had this attitude with your finances, where would you be after three months of spending money on whatever came your way? If you had this attitude with your children’s education, were would they be? Would you drop them off at any old school in the morning and never try to find out what they were being taught? Would you allow them to watch any old television show at any time of the day and night?

No matter which way you look at life, you will see that we all need a certain amount of discipline in every area of our life. What goes into our mouth is no exception!

When you have food cravings, you have to determine why they are occurring. It’s not enough to find a quick fix for them.

There are two primary reasons why people get food cravings:

1. Is it because you ate a food high in sugar earlier in the day?

When you eat foods high in sugar, it’s possible that your insulin and blood sugar levels will be off kilter for the rest of the day. Some experts say one incident of high insulin levels that was instigated by foods high in sugar or high on the glycemic index scale, will be enough to cause food cravings for the next 18 hours. And as if that’s not bad enough, did you know that these same experts say your body will also go on storing fat for the next 18 hours?

This is worth mentioning: sugar is not just sweet, in addition to it’s taste it has a drug like effect. It affects your brain in much the same way as opiate drugs, eg. morphine and heroin, although not as strongly. This may help you to understand why you perhaps crave sugar, especially during times of stress.

2. Is it because your meal plans are irregular and you frequently skip a meal?

Scientists have also discovered that if you start the day by skipping breakfast or eating a breakfast that is not nutritionally sound, then the rest of the day will be filled with food cravings. It’s just about guaranteed.

It is true no-one wants to receive a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes but if there was ever a time to be told you have this problem, this is it. Fortunately, enough is known about diabetes nowadays to make a reasonably normal life possible… but sometimes things can go out of control. This can be frustrating, but it doesn’t mean its time to throw in the towel. Type 2 diabetes is defined and diagnosed according to abnormally high blood sugar levels but for diabetics low blood sugars can be equally problematic.

Your diabetes can go out of control for a number of reasons. Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, is defined as a blood glucose level of below 70 mg/dL (4 mmol/L).

Reasons for hypoglycemia include:

problems with diet, exercise, or medications

skipping meals or snacks

eating later than usual

eating too much sugar or carbohydrate can trigger hypoglycemia. This may sound paradoxical but your blood glucose level may actually go down below normal because your pancreas, sensing a high level, can over-react and produce too much insulin, which can bring your blood glucose down to below the normal level. This is particularly true for type 2 diabetics who are being treated with insulin injections and who still have some pancreatic function.

Despite the obvious benefits to your blood sugar control through exercise, too much of a good thing can cause trouble. Check with your health care provider first so he can review your exercise program. Most providers will recommend:

measuring blood sugar levels before sport or other strenuous exercise

having a snack before beginning exercise if your blood glucose level is below 100 mg/dL (5.5 mmol/L)

it is a good idea to check blood glucose levels after your exercise as well.

Sometimes medications may be adjusted if unusual activity is planned.

Anti-diabetic medications can also be responsible for hypoglycemia:

a higher dose of insulin than is needed can lower your blood sugars far too much

oral hypoglycemic agents, which stimulate your pancreas to produce insulin, can be one of the culprits… Diabinese, Tolinase, and Orinase can cause your blood sugars to drop too far

it is important to take the right dose at the same time every day

Various drugs that can cause hypoglycemia include:

coumadin, or warfarin, given to prevent blood clots

arthritis drugs Zyloprim (allopurinol), Benemid and Probalan (probenecid).

aspirin

alcohol

These can all lead to hypoglycemia when combined with anti-diabetic medications.

Did you know that when reversing hypoglycemia, it is more difficult to reverse low blood sugars caused by taking a large dose of insulin than it is to reverse hypoglycemia caused from missing a meal?

A group of diseases that affect how your body uses blood glucose is known as diabetes mellitus. Chronic conditions are type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The reversible conditions are gestational diabetes and pre-diabetes. Gestational diabetes occur during pregnancy and pre-diabetes is when your blood sugar levels are higher than normal but still not high enough to be classified as diabetes.

There is no known exact cause of type 1 diabetes known to scientists. It is proven that the immune system that protects and fights off harmful bacteria and viruses, mistakenly destroys the cells that produce insulin in the pancreas. This insulin is also known as islet. No matter what the cause of your diabetes, rather it be genetic or triggered by a virus, once the islet cells are destroyed, your body will produce little or no insulin. Type 1 diabetes was also known as juvenile diabetes although it usually appears during adolescence but can develop at any age.

If you have any type of diabetes, your blood has too much glucose. Glucose is vital because it is the body’s main source of energy that fuels your tissue and muscles.

Normally, cells get energy to the body’s muscles and tissues by getting glucose in them from the help of the hormone insulin. The pancreas produces insulin and is located just behind the stomach. When your body is working properly, after eating, insulin will secrete from the pancreas into your bloodstream. Then it circulates and acts like a key unlocking tiny doors that allow sugar to enter into cells. Insulin lowers the amount of sugar in the bloodstream dropping the sugar levels and the secretion from the pancreas.

Our livers act as a manufacturing center that stores glucose. If you haven’t eaten in a while, your insulin levels can get low triggering the liver to convert stored glycogen back to glucose to keep your levels within a normal range. This doesn’t occur with type 1 diabetes, there is no insulin to put glucose into your body’s cells. This causes sugar to build up in your bloodstream, when it should be transported to the cells. When this occurs, it can be life threatening.

The more familiar type 2 diabetes has a different cause. It was once known as adult-onset or non-insulin dependent diabetes, a chronic condition that affects the way your body metabolizes sugar. Islet cells still function, but the pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin or it becomes resistant to it. There is no cure for type 1 or type 2 diabetes, but it is preventable and manageable. You can start with a healthy diet, exercising and maintaining your weight. You still may need insulin therapy or diabetes medications. Your weight and diet should always be managed, even if you are on medications or insulin.

It sounds outrageous, on the other hand recent scientific studies have shown that drinking alcohol in moderation lowers the danger of getting Type two diabetes, vary for adult women. The risk of getting diabetes is actually lower for women drinking in moderation than it is for women who don’t drink at all or who drink too many.

Previous studies on alcohol and diabetes examined the effect of alcohol mainly on men or men and women younger than 55 years of age. The over 50 female group was usually not researched till latterly to determine whether the chances of developing diabetes mellitus would be affected by the consumption of alcohol.

In the starting stages of the research, women were mailed a questionnaire asking for information such as where they resided, how many exercise they got, how much food they consumed, and if they had ever been diagnosed with diabetes, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure. Their weight, height, waist, and hip measurements were taken, in addition to their blood pressure.

As to the problem of alcohol, the study participants were asked if they drank alcohol, how much, the kinds of alcohol they drank, for example, wine, beer or tricky liquor and how frequently they drank. Past and current alcohol consumption habits were discussed also.

Researchers then followed up with participants during a three-5 year period in which 2 additional questionnaires were sent out asking whether or not the individual had been diagnosed with Type two diabetes, and if so, in which year and by which physician. Questions about the type of diabetes treatment were as well asked.

The final results of the research proved strange. It was revealed that among the adult women over 50 years of age, drinking alcohol in moderate amounts reduced the downside of developing Type 2 diabetes. The same study showed that the same moderately drinking group had significantly lower blood pressure than women over 50 who drank more than moderately.

There is currently no explanation why the consumption of alcohol and diabetes are interrelated. While there are some benefits to be had in drinking in moderation, it is critical to keep in mind that every diabetic individual is different and should follow their own gp’s advise with respect to the consumption of alcohol. While it is nice to enjoy an occasional glass of wine, the key is moderation. Check with your gp 1st to ensures that there are no adverse affects relating to your own course of treatment.

Type 2 diabetes is a debilitating disease that creeps silently up on the sufferer like a thief in the night. Left undetected, it can do terrible damage to the human body. Identified in time, it can be easily managed by simply adopting a healthy lifestyle… the trick is to catch it early. If you have any reason at all to suspect that you might be susceptible to type 2 diabetes, then you need to have a good appreciation of nature’s prediabetic warning system.

The following conditions can convert a type 2 diabetic predisposition into a prediabetic state where signs or symptoms are not yet apparent:

achieving middle age

eating large amounts of the “wrong”foods

watching television for many hours during the day instead of taking moderate exercise

putting on weight, especially around your waistline

smoking tobacco

abusing alcohol

developing resistance to insulin also known as insulin resistance

Because type 2 diabetes can do such terrible damage it is important to be on the look-out for the following symptoms in yourself, and your loved ones:

more frequent urination as your body tries to flush the excessive sugar away

frequent thirst due to the resultant dehydration of body cells

a sense of tiredness caused by ongoing sugar deprivation to your body’s cells

increasing and unexplained appetite within a short period of eating

a permanent state of feeling slightly unwell due to chemical imbalances

intermittent or ongoing blurred vision

genital infections, or thrush

slow healing wounds or sores

If any of these things are happening to you or somebody else you know, then this is a warning sign from nature that needs to be heeded. If you are still prediabetic your condition can probably be reversed by following this healthy lifestyle:

adopting a healthy eating plan that includes a lot of low-glycemic (low-GI) carbohydrates, is low in fat and high in fiber

not smoking or abusing alcohol

exercising moderately to keep your body trim and to help lower your blood sugar levels after eating a meal

Your main objective must be to shed excess weight. This is because being overweight and carrying fat around your abdominal area, is the primary cause of insulin resistance, and reversing this trend is the only way to avoid developing full-blown type 2 diabetes.

It is important that you remain alert to prediabetic signs and symptoms, because if you ignore them you could be letting yourself into a lifetime of trouble. You could also avoid type 2 diabetes and a whole raft of other health issues in the first place, simply by following the healthy lifestyle your body was created for.

Diabetes Mellitus is a deficiency in which not enough insulin is produced by the body. Insulin is actually referred to as the hormone that is generated or secreted in the pancreas of our body. Generally it makes cells to take up glucose in which it converts into energy.

When we are affected by this disease, our body does not properly take action to produce insulin. This results in the failure of glucose to gather in the blood, frequently leading to different problems.

Types of Diabetes: 1. Failure of the body to generate insulin: The first type is, when the body is not capable to produce sufficient insulin. From a survey it is predicted that 10-15% of people of America have first type of diagnosis. At the moment, almost everyone having the first type of diagnosis should get insulin injections.

2. Failure of the cells to utilize insulin properly: The second type is the condition in which the cells fail to use insulin correctly. Nearly all of the Americans who have this deficiency disease have the second type of diagnosis. These people mostly suffer from pre-diabetes. It occurs when the glucose level that present in a body is higher than normal other than not sufficient for a diagnosis of type 2. In a survey it is said that about 65 million Americans have this type of disease.

3. Gestational diabetes: Mostly pregnant women’s are suffered by this type. This type of deficiency is caused – when one have not had this diagnosis earlier but have high glucose levels during the time of pregnancy are supposed to be ill with gestational diagnosis. In recent studies undergone world wide this type of disease affects about 7% of all pregnant women in the world.

Symptoms: The typical symptoms are polyuria and polydipsia. The term polyuria refers to numerous urination and high thirst and it results in improved liquid drinking. These kinds of symptoms may grow bit faster within a week or month in first type, mainly it affects the children. But, in the second type the symptoms generally increase much more slowly and may also be slightly or entirely absent.

The first type can also roots to quick however significant weight loss. These signs excluding loss of weight may also noticeable in the second type in the affected people where their diagnosis level is badly restricted, but also there is somewhat weight loss may occur at the start of the disease.

The second type of diagnosis is due to the lapse of blood glucose absorption. When the glucose absorption in the blood is raised from its actual renal threshold, it leads to incomplete reabsorption of glucose in the renal tubuli, and the glucose gets deposited in the glycosuria. This may increase the osmotic pressure of the urine and it leads to kidney failure.

The affected people may also suffers from odor of acetone while breathing, a fast and deep breathing called Kussmaul breathing, vomiting and severe stomach pain. When this occurs severely, coma may take place which leads to blindness and also even death. Conclusion: These deficiencies are treatable if we take the insulin properly. Not only insulin, but also we should not smoke and drink. With these things if we maintain a fit, healthy and strong body weight, it may decrease the dangerous hazards from most of the unending complicated sufferings.

Alcohol may be able to lower your fasting blood glucose

This is an interesting topic as many people who have gone for their fasting glucose test are determined to bring their blood sugar levels down.

So here it goes, drinking alcoholic beverages can lower your fasting blood glucose levels. Nevertheless, do not take this as a treatment and don’t let this lull you into irresponsibility.

How alcohol works in the body

Today, many medical sources say that the ethanol in alcohol inhibits gluconeogenesis, which is the new (neo) making (genesis) of glucose (gluco). So, Gluconeogenesis occurs primarily in the liver and is one way your body supplies glucose to tissues during an overnight fast. If you have gone in for your fasting blood glucose test and you were diagnosed with pre diabetes or diabetes, make sure you follow proper treatment as prescribed by specialists. Even though alcohol may appear to lower your blood sugar level, always drink this with moderation and with the authorization from your personal doctor.

In other words, if when you abstain from food intake over a given period of time, your body uses its liver stores of glucose/glycogen for energy. Once this reserve is depleted, the liver begins to search for glucose from other sources. Alcohol in this case stops the liver from making glucose, so if you haven’t eaten, you run the risk of low blood glucose (hypoglycemia). The glucose lowering effect of your alcohol intake has been documented to last for a whole day. The most common misconception about alcohol is that it eventually turns to sugar…this is 100% false. Contrary to popular belief, alcohol can actually lower your blood glucose as explained above.

Nevertheless, a few words of caution are necessary at this point:

1. Always speak to your doctor before taking any action in regards to alcohol. Your personal condition always has exceptions.

2. If you do consume alcohol, be sure to check your blood glucose levels before and after consumption

3. Never consume alcohol with an empty stomach and DO NOT take alcohol as a replacement for your medication, your exercise and your proper die

4. If you are going to consume alcohol, then it should be ONE drink. One drink is defined as: 5 ounces of wine, 12 ounces of beer or 1.5 ounces of spirits. According to the ADA (American diabetes Association) women should consume no more than one alcoholic drink a day and no more than 2drinks/day for men.

If you are pregnant, and you are trying to mind map all the prenatal tests that you have to undergo, then, I am sure you have considered diagnosing for a gestational diabetes test. Gestational diabetes is diagnosed through a glucose tolerance test. Typically, this glucose tolerance test should be taken between weeks 24-28 of your pregnancy. It is important that you speak to your health care expert about diagnosing this condition during your pregnancy. Ask your doctor about the kind of tests that are used for this diagnosis and how they apply to you. All you need to do is to learn what this test entails, and get more information about when you will need to have it done.

How to diagnose Gestational Diabetes

When you talk about gestational diabetes, then you need to understand that it mostly occurs in pregnant women who have never suffered from diabetes, and don’t have a personal family history of diabetes. The number of pregnant women who are diagnosed with this condition is estimated to be around 5-7 percent. Developing this condition can prove to be quite dangerous, as it can cause severe complications for you and your baby. Basically, when you are diagnosed positive, it simply means that your body is not properly managing its glucose levels. Most health experts advice to test for gestational diabetes when the placenta starts producing hormones that could eventually cause resistance to insulin. This usually takes place approximately between weeks 23-29 of your pregnancy. Check with your doctor for more details.

Here are the steps to follow for your diagnostic:

1. Schedule an appointment with your doctor, and tell him that you would like a diagnostic for gestational diabetes.

2. Once you go in for your glucose screening test, as they call it, you will need allocate about 2 hours for this test. The reason is that you will need an hours interval between your glucose intake, and the drawing of blood to measure the blood glucose level.

3. After a few days you will receive the results of your diagnosis. If you are diagnosed with a blood sugar level above 140 mg/Dl, then you will need to go in for another test called the Oral glucose tolerance test. If your blood glucose level is under 140mg/DL then you can rest assured that you do not have gestational diabetes.

If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, then you know that I cannot over emphasize the need for you to check and monitor your blood sugar levels. Monitoring your sugar level will allow you to better manage your diabetes.

Checking your sugar levels will educate you on the attitude to have in regards to nutrition, exercise, and stress. Basically it will cause you to reevaluate your life style. By monitoring your sugar levels you are taking the initiative to delay or prevent the numerous complications related to diabetes. Most people would simply want to take pills and forget that they have diabetes. For the sake of long life, be sure to check your blood sugar regularly, and do what you need to do to fight this. Don’t give up!

How to check your blood sugar level

It is always better to seek advice from your own personal doctor. This is important, as this advice will specifically be for you.

Otherwise, here are a few guidelines:

• You can order a blood sugar test kit or get one free (There are a few interesting free deals if you look well around)
• Find a well lit and clutter-free area (out of reach of children)
• Before doing anything, be sure your hands and fingers have been disinfected
• If you are doing this from home, be sure to carefully read and follow the instructions.
• Whether it be your forearm or your finger (most popular) apply some alcohol to the said area before pricking with the sterile lancet
• Once you have obtained the drop of blood with the lancet then you need to place this on a test strip (This normally should have come with the testing kit)
• You will need to read the instructions carefully to know when to insert the test strip into the glucose meter
• You will be able to see a number on the display of the meter. This number is the indication of the amount of glucose in your blood.

How often do you need to check your blood sugar level?

All diabetes health care specialists agree that you will need to check and monitor your blood sugar level as frequently as possible. Ask your personal physician the number of times you will need to check your blood level. He/she will normally give you a range as well in terms of frequency and time. It is recommended that you do this 2 times a day…at least for starters. The best times to do this is before breakfast and before supper. As I mentioned earlier, don’t get too bogged down by this.

Check with your personal physician when you should decrease or increase the number of times you check your sugar levels.

If you have a hard time deciding what to eat or what to prepare for your diabetic loved one, take heart. You’ll find here a list of some of the best diabetes foods, already grouped together in an easy-to-use way.

There’s more to this diet than just reversing diabetes. There are the benefits of having mental clarity, extra energy to keep you going, lowered cholesterol, and peace of mind that your diet is no longer contributing to heart attack or stroke.

Balance and variety are both very important in the diabetic diet, as is the wholeness and the purity of the foods you eat. What you eat determines largely your immune system strength, and this will determine your success in regaining health and energy – the energy to reverse diabetes for good!

Here’s a question for you: Is diabetes a disability? This question came up while I was reading an article in the October issue of Diabetes Forecast. There is an article titled, “Cracking the Case.” Long story short, Jeff Kapche was denied a position at the FBI because of his diabetes. He filed suit against them stating that they didn’t hire him because of his diabetes. The FBI said that his diabetes is not a disability because he manages his diabetes well. The court favored Kapche. The case is still heading back to the Federal Court of Appeals for another review. There is no easy answer to this question, it may seem like there is, but there isn’t. Let’s look at it from all sides.

Diabetes IS a disability

When you have diabetes (type 1) there are certain things that you must do in order to live a healthy life. You must check your blood sugar, take insulin whether it is from an insulin pump or syringe, be able to have access to glucose in case of an emergency and many more things that we don’t have to get into at this time. This can definitely hinder your processes of doing normal day to day or daily job tasks. If you are working an extremely physical job then your blood sugar is more likely to drop faster, so this is where diabetes can be considered a disability.

Diabetes IS NOT a Disability

Even with all of the things that you need to do in order to properly manage your diabetes, they do not have to hinder your daily life or your day to day tasks. If you are doing the things that you need to be doing, then you can control your diabetes which does not allow it to become a disability. Whether you are wearing an insulin pump or taking multiple day injections (MDI), you can control your levels.

My 2 Cents

Here’s my 2 cents. Diabetes is in no way a disability. I live a normal life, I just so happen to be diabetic. In the 6 years that I have had diabetes there has not been one single time that I have had to say, “no I can’t do that because I have diabetes.” I eat ice cream cake for birthdays, I ride roller coasters that go upside down while wearing a pump hooked to my hip, I test my blood sugar at the table, at the desk, in the bathroom, at work, at the dinner table, I do everything someone without diabetes does, but more! I don’t see diabetes in any way being a disability. With proper management, you can control it. A disability to me is something that you can’t control.

I think using diabetes as a disability is a scape goat for a lawsuit. Sure, there may be a reason that you don’t get a job because of diabetes, but that is a discrimination, primarily based upon ignorance and the cost of your health to the company hiring you. So, if you are going to file a suit against somebody for discriminating against your diabetes it should be because you are defending that it isn’t a disability and that you are able to do the job just the same as someone without diabetes. Instead, the guy in this article is fighting the FBI and saying that he was denied the job because he DOES have a disability and the FBI is claiming that his diabetes is not a disability.

This irritates me. To think that the ADA is doing a 2 1/2 page article in their magazine talking about how diabetes is a disability. What kind of negative thinking is that? Not the kind that I want to think about. How about they write articles about how it’s not a disability, but people’s pure ignorance to think that we can’t do something just because we have diabetes. I don’t know. But what I do know is that I’m not going to have an organization that is supposed to be furthering advocacy for the disease I live with, start to take steps backwards. If you want to accept diabetes as a disability, then be my guest. That’s your life decision. But I’m not going to let this damn thing hold me down!

Recently I started to think about some of the things related to diabetes that really make me mad. Diabetes in general doesn’t because I have learned to live with it, deal with it and manage it. It is usually other people that make me mad when it comes to diabetes. Let’s start with the top 3 things, in no particular order.

Diabetic vs Person with Diabetes

I personally don’t understand all of the hype around this. If you want to call me a person with diabetes, go ahead. You want to call me diabetic, which I prefer, then go ahead. I don’t really care what you call me. Diabetic is just the term that is used to call somebody who has diabetes. Why all of a sudden is it such a bad thing? I think it is a good thing when someone calls me a diabetic, because I have diabetes, so therefore I am diabetic. I guess if I hear one very good logical reasoning of the PWD thing then I will go with it. Like I said, I have no problem if that is what you want to be called, I will call you that. Quite honestly, I would rather call you by your first name and not diabetic or person with diabetes at all.

Supply Switching

Who the hell are you (fill in the blank with your supply company) to tell me what meter, strips, lancets or pen needles I want to use? Do you think that I care about your bottom line figures and that you make more money off of the generic lancets than the brand name. I don’t really care about the 200% profit you are making, I care that the lancets that I am using are not damaging and bruising my fingers constantly. I want a pen needle that is going to penetrate my skin and not hurt when it goes in because its not sharp enough. A few years ago when I was still using an old supplier, will not mention names, they continued to send me these cheap generic lancets when I wanted the One Touch ones. They kept sending them every 90 days and I would call and tell them to stop, but they wouldn’t let me return them, I still had to pay for them. They then went far enough to tell me that the One Touch ones are no longer made, they have been discontinued. So when I was walking through Wal-Mart one day I saw them there and then went off on the company. I called 4 times a day every day for like 2 straight weeks to make sure I got every customer service rep there.

Not the same goal in mind

There are a lot of non-profits, organizations, blogs, communities and they do not know how to work together. What do we all want? A cure, right? Of course there are some other things that would be great along the way, but ultimately it is about finding a cure, spreading awareness and giving people an arena to share and talk about, especially in the online world. Then why can’t we just all work together and not look at other people in the diabetes world as “competitors”. I’m not saying that everyone does that, I’m speaking of the minority on this one, but it just irritates the hell out of me. Those are the 3 main things that just make me mad. What are some others that tick you the wrong way?

What Is Diabetes? Why Do We Need To Slash Down Our Sugar Intake?

Of course nobody wants to suffer from the painful diabetes ending results. When glucose builds up in the bloodstream, the cells become starved for energy because they do not have access to the glucose and in short term and long term frequent glucose build-up increases the acidity of the blood, damaging many of the body’s organs, including the eyes, kidneys, nerves and/or heart. Insulin is a substance that is necessary to breakdown our sugar intake into small particle to be able to maximize by our body to produce fuel and energy for our day to day activities. As the diabetes begins to climb around the world, the government and other health care providers are initiating efforts to invest in health education, diagnosis and treatments for this chronic, unbearable – but controllable – disorder. As we all know, millions of people all over the world have tried to let go of their mouth-watering and tasty sugar products.

Types of Diabetes

The major treatment of type-1 diabetes, even in its earliest stages, is the delivery of artificial insulin by means of injection combined with careful monitoring of blood glucose levels using blood testing monitors. Eye problems can lead to trouble seeing or going blind. Type-1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes since its affect majority of the diabetic children. Insulin may be given by injections using a syringe, insulin pump, or insulin pen. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. Gestational diabetes may occur in women who is age 25 years old or older, but some women have greater risks in developing gestational diabetes.

Diabetes Treatment

Ask for help from your friends and family if you are feeling which will help you to overcome the stress. A health care team may help you take care of your diabetes as well as you doctor, dentist, diabetes educator, dietitians, friends and family. In no time you will be able to continuously enjoy life without the worries of your diabetes. Quit your smoking and your excessive intake of alcohol.

Alternative Diabetes Cures Through The Herbal Way

Once we encounter difficulty in absorbing sugar, diseases like diabetes may be at hand. When our body malfunctions or suddenly experience any abnormality, it may only conclude that there is something wrong within. Diabetes consists of three types, one is the Type 1 diabetes, the second is the Type 2 diabetes and the third one is gestational diabetes. Since bitter melons are considered to have twice the potassium compared to bananas at the same time increase the amount of beta cells, these melons may help the pancreas to produce insulin. Diabetes hinders our body’s process of in-taking foods that we need to converted into energy. Once you feel the diabetes symptoms you should seek immediate medical help. When we digest food, pieces of the grounded foods are converted through a processes.

An effective management of diabetes requires a healthy lifestyle, balanced diet, exercise and weight control. Diabetes is a condition of having a high level of sugar in the blood. However, having diabetes does not mean patients are completely restricted from eating sweet foods, it is still part of the overall diet plan.

Improved glycemic control benefits people with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Every percent of a reduction will reduce the risk of microvascular diabetic complications such as eye blindness, kidney failure and nerve diseases.

Points to remember in maintaining a Diet For Diabetes:

* Eat the same amount of food everyday
* Eat about the same time each day
* Taking medication at same time each day
* Exercise at same time everyday
* Choose foods from food groups of: starches, vegetables, fruit, meat, milk and yogurt
* Limit the amount of fats you eat
* Maintain amount of water to drink.

Here is a sample daily calorie diet for diabetes if you have 2,000 to 2,400 calories a day. This diet is suitable for a medium woman/large man who does a lot of exercise or has a physically active job, a large man at a healthy weight and a large woman who exercises a lot or has a physically active job.

– 11 starches
– milk and yogurt
– 4 vegetables
– meat
– fruits
– Fats 5 max.

Talk to your dietitian to make a meal plan that fits the way you should eat, daily routine and your medications. Once you are use to what you can and can not eat, you then can decide to make your own plan, but make sure that you are aware of the calorie count of the foods you eat, especially fresh foods.

Pre-diabetes is described as a “gray area” onset of type 1 diabetes but before type 2 diabetes is fully developed. It is a crucial stage where the patient still has a chance to turnaround the situation because the level of glucose in the blood is in between normal and diabetic level. A must stop point of diabetes because when fully developed into type 2 diabetes, would be a life-long disease that you are going to suffer with forever.

Since pre-diabetes is generally a silent condition there is no evidence of physical symptoms. But, you are at high risk if you have a family history of diabetes and you are obese or overweight. Even though you cannot determine the symptoms of pre-diabetes, you can tell whether or not you have diabetes through testing. However, you can calculate your risk factors of developing pre-diabetes by:

– Taking into account your age
– Height
– Weight
– Family medical history
– The weight of your baby when you give birth
– Level of exercise
– Diet
– Water consumption
– Role inflammation (triggers a defense response to harmful stimuli or injury by sending antibodies to damage areas where they fight invading bacteria from going into the body)

Pre-diabetes can create an imbalance in glucose and insulin level in the blood, which can lead into weight gain and even obesity through wrong diet and sedentary lifestyle. Pre-diabetes symptoms can be prevented by weight loss with the combination of proper diet and exercise. If left unattended it will developed into fully blown type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes, also known as Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus, is a chronic life-long disease that results when the body’s insulin does not work properly. It is the most common type of diabetes that effects massive amount of people around the world. Type 2 Diabetes is not shy in who it effects such as children, adults, men, women and worst of all, senior citizens.

Type 2 Diabetes Symptoms

* Increased urination – frequent urge to urinate
* Unusual thirst -discomfort and disturbance of being thirsty
* Tiredness – low resistance and low energy in doing everyday tasks
* Loss of weight
* Increased appetite – constant craving for food, even if you have just eaten.
* Feeling sick
* Blurred vision – unclear vision and even blindness
* Genital infections – yeast infection (Candida infection)

If you have any of these symptoms, there are a few test to be conducted to find out if you are diabetic. They are: Fasting blood glucose level – diabetes diagnosed at 126 mg/dL, Random blood glucose (non-fasting) – diabetes suspected at 200 mg/dL, Oral glucose tolerance – diabetes diagnosed at 200 mg/dL after 2 hours.

This series of tests are conducted to help the patient and the doctor to determine the right diet plan and treatment to prevent complication from developing. Knowing your family history will help as well, however, there is nothing much we can do about it.

Type 2 diabetes symptoms are warnings to alert the patient to take preliminary precautions to avoid the condition getting worse. If one or more symptoms is noticed contact your physician as soon as possible to give you advice on the kind of foods to eat, proper calorie diet plan and exercise. Doing exercise at least 20 to 30 minutes a day is good enough to stimulate and motivate your body to fight this disease.

Juvenile diabetes is a chronic metabolism condition caused by the body’s inability to break down glucose and store it properly. The onset of this type of diabetes begins in childhood where the child becomes insulin-dependent. This is also known as Type 1 diabetes. It is an auto-immune disorder similar to other illnesses such as rheumatoid arthritis or multiple sclerosis. Without proper and adequate medical treatment and supervision, serious health problems may occur like heart attacks, blindness and nerve damage that can ultimately cause loss of limbs and kidney failure, even death.

Juvenile Diabetes Symptoms are the following:

* Frequent urination
* Unusual thirst, particularly for sweet, cold drinks.
* Extreme hunger
* Sudden, sometimes dramatic, weight loss.
* Low resistance
* Extreme fatigue
* Blurry vision
* Irritability
* Nausea and vomiting (acute symptoms)

If you have a very young child and are concerned with some of the things you see but yet cannot explain, they might also be at risk for Juvenile Diabetes. Such symptoms may include:

* Restless
* Apathetic
* Have trouble functioning at school
* Diabetic coma may be the first sign (severe cases)
* Abnormally thirsty
* Need to urinate frequently – bed-witting after toilet training been completed.
* Losing weight in spite of good appetite
* Vaginal “yeast” infections
* Vomit (mistaken for flu)
* Abdominal pain (mistaken for appendicitis)
* Breath rapidly and deeply (severe cases)
* has fruity odor on breathing (severe cases)
* May lose consciousness

Doctors diagnose diabetes by testing for glucose and ketones in the urine and by measuring glucose levels in blood through fasting and non-fasting glucose count. It is crucial to follow the physician’s treatment plan to avoid serious side effects. The best way to control blood sugar in the blood is with proper diet and exercise.

Diabetes is the same as any other sickness. It has symptoms, causes, treatment and also prevention. Since there is no known cure, it is best to learn how to prevent diabetes from occurring and also learn alternative treatments for diabetes-related illness complications if developed. Prevention is always best and better than a cure.

I have gathered a few steps to prevent diabetes and diabetes-related complications from developing. They are:

- Maintain a healthy weight. Over weight individuals have a high risk of developing diabetes. If you are eating large amounts of food 3 times a day start dividing it in small meals and gradually reduce the quantity. Drink plain water before eating meals to take the edge of your hunger.
- Know your family history.
- Stay physically active.
- Eat a balanced diet.
- Regular medical check-ups.
- Monitor your blood pressure regularly.
- Reduce the amount of fats, protein and carbohydrates you eat. Grill and bake instead of frying.
- Check the nutritional facts of the foods you buy. Knowing what each food contains helps you to determine which is best for you to maintain your blood sugar count.
- Drink 7 to 8 glasses of water everyday. It will help keep your body from dehydration and water cleanses our body from toxins.
- Choose a healthy snack.
- Use skimmed milk, non-fat or low-fat milk rather than full-fat milk in hot drinks.
- Exercise is good for health, so exercise regularly.

All the actions stated above are part of the steps taken if you are diagnosed with diabetes. If you do these steps in advance, you will surely prevent yourself from becoming diabetic and avoid any diabetes-related complications.

Living With Diabetes

People with diabetes can lead normal lives, and they can continue to exercise and eat most foods. However, it is very important to eat a healthy diet, maintain your fitness and if necessary lose weight. Following a healthy regimen helps reduce the risk of developing complications over time, including heart disease, circulatory problems, and kidney failure.

A Healthy Diet

For some people with diabetes, a healthy diet and weight loss are enough to keep blood glucose levels normal. Your diet should be high in complex carbohydrates, such as rice, pasta and legumes, and low in fats, especially animal fats.

Drinking and Smoking

Alcohol in moderation is safe for most people, but in excess in may lower blood glucose levels. In addition, it is high in calories and may cause weight gain. Smoking is very harmful because it greatly increases the risk of long term complications, such as heart disease and stroke.

If you have diabetes and smoke, you should stop. If you drink alcohol, you can continue to do so, but you should drink in moderation and seek out the feedback of your doctor as to whether you should abstain or not.

Special Care For Your Feet

Diabetes can increase the risk of skin infections and ulcers on the feet. You can reduce the risk by wearing comfortable shoes, visiting your podiatrist frequently, not walking barefoot and cutting your toenails straight across. You should inspect and clean your feet daily and consult your promptly if you develop a sore on your feet.

Exercise and Sports

Regular exercise makes you feel healthier, reduces the risk of heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure, and can help if you need to lose weight. If you have insulin dependent diabetes, you may need to monitor your blood glucose before, during and after exercise to check how the activity affects your requirement for both insulin and food.

If you exercise strenuously, your blood glucose levels will usually drop. You will need to adjust your level of insulin or eat more before strenuous exercise.

Moderate exercise, such as a 30 minute walk, may improve the chance of controlling your diabetes.

It is frustrating to know that you or your loved one is suffering from diabetes. However if you just sit in the corner of the room, cry and feel sorry knowingly that t is a threat to your health and life then this will not be of any help.

Certainly you have to do something about it. There are many ways of treating diabetes the most preferred one that should be adopted initially is natural treatment. There are many foods that lower blood sugar level. Why not take the start by incorporating those foods that lower blood sugar in your meal plans.

There are meal plans that are specifically designed for diabetics. Either you can get these plans or design your own incorporating the foods that lower blood sugar level. Lot of free information is available in the internet that will help you to design your meal plan. The main idea behind the diabetic meal plan is to control the blood glucose level.

The best foods that must be incorporated in the diet plan are the foods that are rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. The best examples of such foods are garlic and onion. The right dosage of fresh vegetables and foods also help to lower the blood sugar.

It is better to avoid the processed foods as much as possible. It is not only as they contain large amount of sugar content but they may also contain preservatives and MSG which is harmful to health. It is advisable to eat fresh foods but not the ones that are packed in tetras, cans and tins.

While planning the diabetic meal plan you must be also careful about what you will drink. Soft drinks and sodas will only worsen the condition. It is better to avoid these drinks as they contain carbon, glucose and other chemicals that may harm the body. You must only drink healthy juices made fro, carrots, coconuts and other health vegetables. Drinking green tea also enables to lower the excess glucose from the body.

Reactive Hypoglycemia Diet, is in essence a diet that consists of eating up to 5-6 small meals throughout the day, and each meal shouldn’t be spaced more than 3 hours apart. This makes certain that your sugar levels remain stable and don’t drop drastically.

But hold on a minute, what is Hypoglycemia and Reactive Hypoglycemia ? Hypoglycemia alias low glucose level, is a condition where an individuals blood glucose drops beneath normal level. Glucose is a significant source of vitality for humans and without it, the body can’t operate properly. Therefore, when blood sugar levels fall below normal level, hypoglycemia symptoms will set in.

Symptoms of hypoglycemia include fatigue, hunger, mental confusion, dizziness, sweating, and so on. Exceedingly low blood glucose level could even result in seizure, coma and even death.

Reactive hypoglycemia is a specific case of hypoglycemia that happens to non-diabetic people. Reactive hypoglycemia is also about depleted blood sugar level, but the symptoms are activated 2-3 hours after food. The reason being due to the pancreas discharging insulin well beyond the digestion period of the meal. This surplus insulin is the chief culprit for making low blood glucose in a person with reactive hypoglycemia.

Treatment for reactive hypoglycemia ought be based on two main aims. Avoid “overloading” the pancreas and cutting back insulin output. To accomplish this objective, sufferers are typically advised to abide by a particular diet plan and avoid food consisting mainly of simple carbohydrates.

Carbohydrates are split in to two types, simple carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates are foods that are easy to convert into glucose, in order to be absorbed into the bloodstream. This speedy absorption of glucose will stimulate a sudden spike in blood sugar and this frequently is the prime cause of reactive hypoglycemia.

Therefore, avoid food with simple carbohydrates. Some examples would be: white rice, white bread, sweets, chocolates, ice cream, cakes, and so on. In general, extremely processed foods are also foods that are high in carbohydrates.

Complex carbohydrates, as opposed to simple carbohydrates, are harder to digest and breakdown. So, the transition and absorption of glucose is also slowed up. Because of these reasons, complex carbohydrates are particularly advantageous to reactive hypoglycemia. A a few examples of food high in complex carbohydrates are – brown rice, whole grain bread, oatmeal, vegetables, etc.

It is true that diabetes can bring certain complications which impede the normal development of daily tasks. However, with proper treatment and following recommendations indicated by your doctor, you can enjoy a healthy life.

If you fail in taking precautions and care, diabetes damages various organs in the short and long term, especially those directly related to the nervous and circulatory systems increasing the chance of suffering a heart attack or cerebral issues. It also can cause vision problems and even sexual impotence.

Diabetes without adequate control will have serious consequences for the individual, such as the amputation of one or more of their extremities (hands, feet) due to internal damage or other infections.

Diabetic Neuropathy

Diabetic neuropathy is a diabetes complication that can cause nervous disorders in the body. The factors that influence their development are:

* Heritage. Some genetic traits can be constraints; there are people more susceptible to nerve disease than others.

* High glucose in the blood. It causes chemical changes in nerves and their ability to transmit signals. It also has the potential to damage the blood vessels that carry oxygen and nutrients to them.

Although the intimate mechanisms by which occurs diabetic neuropathy are not fully known, it is known that nerve fiber changes structurally due to the accumulation of substances derived from the metabolism of glucose in excess, causing the loss of the normal coating of nerve fibers: myelin. The loss of this protection causes a delay in the capacity of transmission of nerve information, both of reception and movement commands as well as other kinds. In addition to this direct mechanism, vessels that irrigate the nerves can become clogged by common mechanisms with other chronic complications of diabetes.

The symptoms of this condition are: numbness in the hands or feet, sore hands, feet or legs; problems in internal organs like the digestive tract and heart, as well as sexual organs. This can cause indigestion, diarrhea, bladder infections, impotence, weakness, weight loss and depression.

Treatment can include pain medications, antidepressants drugs, topical creams, stimulation therapy, relaxation training and acupuncture. Now, you must know that there are preventive treatments that can keep us away from any symptoms related to this condition. Note that one of the most important measures is to control levels of sugar in the blood. Take your medicines as your doctor suggested to the letter. Prefer a variety of nutritious foods and avoid foods with lots of fat and sugar. If you are overweight, ask your doctor how to lose some pounds.

Most people who have diabetes know very well what a threat it can be. And it is only natural that they would want to know measures that cure it or at least reduce the symptoms. But artificial drugs are not necessary – there are three kinds of natural cures for diabetes.

Diet: no-one will disagree that a proper diet promotes good health in general; but it does manifest itself as probably the best of all natural cures for diabetes. A proper diabetic menu should feature a low glycemic index – the foods containing low carbohydrate levels, moderate protein rates and much fibre. Such a diet will reduce a diabetic’s blood sugar level and the intake of insulin levels and lessen the need for medications. (It will also aid in reducing weight and blood pressure; it will promote the body’s overall health and energy as well as cure the diabetes condition.) Good food ideas for the diabetic: tomato juices, rose apple, lemon, cucumber, bitter gour, spinach, carrot, cabbage.

Exercise: many sing the praises of exercise as being great for obtaining a toned body but studies have shown that it is also good as a counter-diabetes measure. A diabetic who undertakes regular exercise will benefit from reduced weight, lower blood glucose levels, and better insulin sensitivity but also a stronger immune system, and better blood circulation and cholesterol regulation. Yogic asanas are a popular option (Bhujangasana, Dhanurasana, Sarvangasana, Paschitmottasana and others). Walking / jogging and things like badminton are also recommended.

You can purchase nutritional supplements that are effective at curing diabetes naturally. They are always worth considering: they lower blood sugar and insulin levels, cholesterol levels, blood pressure and the risk of heart disease; they improve energy. They can protect key physical tissues from the damage that diabetes is capable of causing.

Recipes continue to spread gastronomic creativity to all of us – but it’s not just about cooking skills, is it? What I mean is, when it comes to recipes, a lot of people like to use them as the basis of a weekly meal plan (Monday is may be meatloaf night; Tuesday may be pork chop night, Wednesday may be spaghetti night etc.). Such a premise may be widely regarded as convenient – and why not? – but it can get boring and monotonous; which is why you don’t always have to search in cook books for new ideas. This article belongs in that category; but it’s likely to bring a bit more light into the lives of people who suffer from diabetes: read on specifically for ideas for food recipes for diabetics!

You don’t actually have to look too hard – articles of this sort are hardly elusive. And it’s even more pleasing to know that those recipes that are most well known as food recipes for diabetics, are easy to make, their instructions easy to follow.

Top of this list is chicken vegetable pasta. Cook some chicken normally while boiling some pasta; add frozen vegetables to pasta 3-4 minutes before the pasta is finished. Then just drain and serve it.

Spanish style egg roll ups is just scrambling eggs, with a dash of shredded cheese on top; before being rolled up into a tortilla.

Pasta and vegetables are always a delicious combination; as is cream cheese and jam toast (diabetics should go easy on the cream cheese though!).

With baked chicken in a zing, roll some readily-marinated (in Italian dressing) boneless and skinless chicken breasts in Parmesan cheese, breadcrumbs and herbs. Bake at 350 degrees for roughly 40 minutes, or until it is thoroughly cooked and golden brown.

The effects of diabetes can be quite alarming (indeed, the worst symptoms can be fatal). They are caused by the medical conditions hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia; if you suffer from diabetes it’s just common sense to control blood sugar for the purpose of not suffering them regularly yourself.

There are many easy techniques by which you can control blood sugar. The first of these is diet. Diabetics who monitor their diet like this, consume less carbohydrate, the foods having a low glycemic index, together with moderate protein and fibre levels. And it is better to consume food in small amounts rather than in bulk.

Drinking water, and lots of it, regulates blood glucose to a notable degree. Diabetics are advised to drink a good deal of water every day – things like soft drinks and tea and coffee do not count.

The consumption of fruits is recommended over that of big meals – and the former contains plenty of citric acid, which is good for reducing weight and thus properly regulating sugar in blood. Look at rose apples, apples, grapefruits, oranges and all citrus fruits.

Exercises are good for controlling a diabetic’s glucose levels. You will find that things like badminton are amazing for reducing blood sugar very quickly. Yogic Asanas certainly reduce sugar, with walking / jogging being good for circulation.

Diabetics seeking to lower blood glucose levels are well advised to pick herbal tea over normal tea or coffee. For natural herbal tea (commonly referred to as green tea) is very effective as a blood sugar blocker. Green tea keeps blood sugar in check after the consumption of foods that are snacks that contain a lot of glucose. Diabetics are advised to have 3 or 4 cups of green tea a day.

Finally, diabetics should avoid processed and tinned foods.

We’ve all heard that “you are what you eat”, and that eating properly is vital if we want to stay healthy; but this is even more true if you’re a diabetic. One should take note of the various categories that fall under the umbrella term “diabetic foods to avoid”.

What classifies particular food or drinks as “diabetic foods to avoid”, is their capacity to result in the diabetic’s sugar levels transcending what is accepted as normal (i.e. between 75 and 150). To monitor a diabetic’s sugar levels, is what monitoring and controlling their condition is all about; and the diabetic would do well to accommodate a range of changes to his or her diet as necessary. There are foods that should be cut down on as well as foods that should be consumed on a regular basis.

It would wrong to claim that there is any kind of food that diabetics should never eat at all (indeed, eliminating all sugar from one’s diet is rather inadvisable). But diabetics should stay clear of regularly consuming foods that are high in sugar or fat. If you’re a diabetic, only eat cakes and biscuits and such, occasionally.

Wise diabetics replace white sugar with palm sugar, dates or honey. Unpolished rice and sprouted grain should be consumed in moderation. And go for low-fat dairy options, such as skimmed milk, non-fat yoghurt and cheese and plain yoghurt. (Especially avoid khoya, kheer and cottage cheese – these are high in carbohydrates!) Processed foods, white flour and junk food (such as confectionery / sweets, cakes, ice-cream, chocolates, cream, soft drinks and fried foods) must be virtually fully renounced – even the sugar-free versions of sweets can be a bad idea. Finally, avoid things containing harmful preservatives or excessive salt, watch that alcohol and don’t smoke!

The benefits of diabetic exercises are tremendous, especially if you want to achieve optimum health. If you look and feel good about yourself, you will want to achieve more and you will become more motivated, which is a great benefit in achieving the results you want and deserve.

To get the most out of diabetic exercises you need to set yourself a target and layout your exercise routine and stick to it. Making sure that you do your exercises on a regular basis is essential if you want to succeed and see the results. There are only two requirements that you need for diabetic exercise and they are:

Make sure you do the exercises

And make sure that you continue with your exercises

Exercising your muscles requires fuel and the type of fuel they need is glucose. By moving your muscles, you automatically burn up glucose. So while you are exercising you draw the glucose out of the blood and therefore lowering you blood glucose levels. Some of the other benefits of diabetic exercise are listed below:

Lower blood pressure

Improve on your sleeping

Gain more energy

Gain stronger bones

Improve your digestion

Less medications – the amount of medications could be reduced over time

Improvement on your weight

Improvement on your circulation

Gain more good cholesterol (HDL) and reduce the bad cholesterol (LDL)

Increase your insulin sensitivity, and

Maintain a better mood, exercise produces chemicals in your brain called endorphins which allows you to cope better with stress

If you implement just 30 minutes a day of diabetic exercise into your day you will see amazing results after a short period of time. Please remember to consult with your doctor before starting any new exercise regime to make sure that it is suitable for your individual needs.

By adding physical activity into your daily routine you are one step closer to managing your diabetes and avoiding all the complications that are associated with diabetes.

Performing physical exercises with regularity can only be good for your body. Diabetes and exercise are tightly connected, as regular physical activity can dramatically improve your condition and relieve some of the symptoms. Any type of exercise can be performed, but it is recommended to maintain a moderate intensity. The recommended exercises include:

- Endurance exercises
- Balance exercises
- Stretching exercises
- Strength exercises

Exercises are not only safe, but also recommended, especially if you suffer from diabetes. Physical activity will help you to:

- Burn any excess fat that you may have
- Increase insulin sensitivity
- Prevent obesity, which is very common in people suffering from diabetes

Since excess fat and obesity, in general, are commonly accompanied by heart diseases and stroke, preventing them can only be a good thing. Endurance exercises represent the part of physical activity that improves your heart rate, as well as your breathing. As a result, your heart, circulatory system and lungs will become healthier. Some of the endurance exercises you should try include:

- Swimming
- Cycling
- Jog-walking
- Tennis
- Volleyball
- Dancing
- Rowing

The connection between diabetes and exercise does not stop here. If endurance exercises can be useful in the prevention of diabetes, strength exercises will help you build muscles, and thus, use glucose more efficiently as a source of energy. Some strength exercises are:

- Arm raise
- Chair stand
- Biceps curl
- Triceps extension
- Shoulder flexion
- Hip extension

Stretching exercises will improve the flexibility of your body. As a result, you will be able to perform the other types of exercises better. Now that you know some details on the connection between diabetes and exercise, you will be more determined to go to the gym or have physical activities once in a while.

Diet fads come and go-this is an understatement. Like all of those diets, weight loss programs like weight loss supplements and the likes are also a fly by night method in augmenting weight loss. By far, a more permanent way to shed off unwanted pounds without putting a strain on our health is through the adherence to an ideal diet plan.

Diet plans may vary on the person who wants to follow it. These diet plans may include those that are too strenuous to follow, although such strictness is not ideal for the reason that the followers of this diet program might back out form the said program. Accordingly, an easy to follow weight loss program is more apt for further results. It can also help us avert from the onset of some chronic diseases such as obesity and hypertension.

Diabetes can be called a growing epidemic, for the reasons that its prevalence has been known to escalate. Actually, the number of people who have died due to the complications brought by diabetes has also increased remarkably. Fortunately, diabetes can also be avoided through several healthy practices.

Probably the most ideal way to decrease your risk for diabetes is to start exercising. Almost every other health problem is a result of a lack of exercise and the one of the most important component of the treatments for these same problems is also exercise. If there is something nearest to what can be called a cure all, then exercise is it. Regular exercise can help control your blood glucose, lower your blood pressure and improve your blood cholesterol level. By doing cardiovascular conditioning workouts you can reduce your risk for heart disease and stroke. For diabetics, the benefits of engaging in regular physical activity include increased flexibility, improved blood circulation and more efficient use of insulin. According to recent research, just about any form of exercise is able to improve blood glucose control.

For those people whoa re already experiencing the triggering symptoms of diabetes make wise lifestyle choices as early as now to avoid the complications of diabetes in the future. Opt for healthy foods. Having a wide variety of healthy foods is a good option for those who are likely to be diagnosed with diabetes. Foods that are high in fiber and low in fats and carbohydrates are ideally included in a meal to avoid diabetes. This is due to the reason that the glucose in the blood might not be regulated by insulin when the insulin is not being secreted by the pancreas properly. This would likely result in the triggering of diabetes, especially when the carbohydrates that are broken down as glucose cannot be stored as energy and instead, is stored as fat in the cells.

These tips are very common but following them is quite perennial to the avoidance of diabetes. These tips are especially recommended for those people who have triggering factors that may cause diabetes, like obesity and genetic factors. So start doing your role in taking care of your body so it would not cause inconveniences in the long run.

The cost of having to buy diabetic products is financially draining. From buying a blood glucose meter to maintaining an ample supply of insulin, expenses just keep on adding up. You spend a few thousand dollars on test strips in one year alone and that still does not include expenses on blood monitoring supplies like glucometer, that may need to be replaced from time to time, disposable insulin syringes, injections, needles, pens, foot care products, and frequent trips to the doctor.

Needless to say, cutting back on your expenses is a welcome prospect. Here are some useful tips that can help you save on diabetic products:

Talk to your insurance provider. Although very limited, there are insurance companies that cover your expenses on diabetic products. Some companies pay for your blood glucose meters, insulin injections, medications, and other diabetes supplies. To know the extent of coverage you can get, it is best to talk to your insurance provider. But, be sure to clarify all your concerns with a qualified insurance personnel. Many consumers end up paying more than what they initially expected because they were misinformed. Be sure to ask whether only a particular brand is covered and whether test strips, for example, can be reimbursed.

Ask for a free glucometer. Many companies, insurance companies and manufacturers alike, give away free glucometers. Drugstores and pharmacies have a lot of perks that could help you save a couple of dollars on glucometers as well. If you look hard enough, you may even find free coupons in magazines and pharmacy flyers. The truth is, glucometers don’t really have to burden your budget for diabetes treatment. The easiest way to get them for free is to simply call the manufacturer of the blood glucose meter and ask for a free sample, if they are offering one, or express your interest in buying their new product. This can also work with all other diabetic products like syringes, lancets, infusion sets, needle tips, and insulin cartridges.

Buy your supplies online. You will be surprised by how much money you can save by just browsing on diabetic products online. With the exception of some online vendors that mark up their products excessively, there are plenty of online sellers who give huge discounts on their products. Some sellers can give as much as 50% discount on their products with free shipping, and sometimes a free item or two. When looking for an online supplier, make sure you find one that provides all the supplies you need.

Buy in bulk. Buying your diabetic supplies wholesale can save you delivery costs, dispensing fees and other expenses associated with purchasing drugs regularly.

Replace your medications with generic drugs. Generic drugs may look different from brand name drugs, but their efficiency and effects on the body are practically the same. Their price does not speak of their quality, but ratherf the absence of patent protection, which costs a lot.

Do not let up on your medications. Some people have the tendency to stop taking their medications once symptoms of diabetes subside, thinking that they can save on medication expenses this way. In the long run, this would not only prove detrimental, but will also pile up your expenses later to address complications that may arise.

What is the Oral Glucose Tolerance test?

The oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), commonly known among medical professionals as the glucose tolerance test, is a test that measures your body’s ability to metabolize glucose, or clear it out of the bloodstream. In other words, it sees how your body treats the extra sugar that is in the blood, and how this extra sugar actually permeates your red blood cells, which normally should convert them to energy for the body. The ogtt can be used to diagnose diabetes, gestational diabetes or pre diabetes. The ogtt is used to diagnose both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. This test is more complicated than the fasting blood glucose test, and it takes way more time too.

How does the oral glucose tolerance test ogtt work?

If you are taking the oral glucose tolerance test ogtt to diagnose a pre diabetic or a diabetic state, then you should eat normally and keep health nutrition habits 5-7 days before taking the test. So, this means you will need to consume at least 140-210 grams of carbohydrates a day in addition to your fruits and vegetable of course! If you are pregnant, then these conditions do not apply to you. You may want to check with your doctor for a more personalized plan of action.

Once you come in, (In the morning I presume), your blood will be drawn to measure and establish your fasting glucose level. You will then be given sweet drink (glucose filled) that you will immediately drink. Normally, this drink should contain 75 -80 grams of carbohydrates. Note that I said “typically”. The reason why many complain that oral glucose tolerance test ogtt is long is because; your blood will continually be drawn and measured for glucose levels for the next 2 hours. If you have not gone in for your test yet, then you should prepare yourself mentally and brace yourself for any unforeseen surprises.

If you are contemplating going in for an oral glucose tolerance test ogtt, here are few things you should know:

Remember that even though the oral glucose tolerance test ogtt is used to diagnose diabetes, it is also used to give you information about your body’s ability to metabolize the sugar level(s) in your blood. If you already have poor diet and nutrition habits, be ready to face the reality of the consequences. If the readings of your oral glucose tolerance test ogtt are high, then it has an indication that the insulin in your body is not able to regulate the level of sugar in your blood stream. In this sense, this test is a signal for action that will help a patient take control of his or her health. In several cases, patients have succeeded in reversing their diabetes. However, before jumping to any sort of conclusion, it is advisable that you consult your doctor for additional information and recommendations.

Here are few options you can use to test your blood sugar with diabetes:

1. Blood sugar monitoring at home: This method is the most common. It involves pricking your finger with a sharp needle (professionally designed for). You will then need to squeeze the finger in order to obtain a drop of blood which you will then place on a test strip. This test strip will then be placed into a meter which will in turn determine you blood sugar level. The meters on the market today come in different shapes sizes and features, but they all provide the exact same information – your blood sugar level. These test kits are available at your local pharmacy, and in some cases you can find free test kits on the Internet, but again, you have to be vigilant.

2. Alternative meter test kits. Over the years, newer meters now allow you to test body parts other than your fingertip; these include your upper arms, your forearms, the base of your thumb, and your thighs. Despite these additional options drawing blood from your finger tips remains the most used. This is simply because the blood sugar level in your finger tips, show changes way quicker than any other part of the body. Why is this important? Simple. After exercise, or a meal your blood sugar tends to fluctuate quite a bit. This is why the finger tip remains the most popular.

3. Drawing blood through laser. Sometime in 1998 the Food And Drug (FDA) administration approved a meter laser device capable of extracting blood through a precise laser beam on a finger. This device was really in response to the numerous complaints of discomfort and pain caused by the regular pricking of the finger.

4. The continuous glucose monitoring system. This device involves a very small tube which is inserted under your skin. The device then collects small amounts of fluids and measures the sugar content of these fluids over a 72 hour period.

5. The Gluco Watch. Again, the FDA approved in 2001 the GlucoWatch which is device that is like a watch. This watch-like meter helps the diabetes patient measure his or her blood sugar level three times per hour over a 12 hour period. This is one of the first diabetes testing meter that that is really non invasive.

All these diabetes testing meters perform one and the same thing – some less, and others more. However, all the newer devices are still being rigorously tested. Maybe, one day, the pricking of your finger will become something of the past, but today, this method remains the most reliable, and the most popular. As long as you know what your normal blood sugar range should be, it doesn’t really matter which diabetes testing method you use. Here is a sample blood sugar level chart:

Normal blood glucose levels: 70-110mg before meals and 70-140 mg after breakfast, lunch or dinner.

For people with diabetes the preferred blood glucose levels should be:

90-130mg before meals and after meals it should not rise to above 180mg.

It is important to remember that the body gets its sugar from your daily carbohydrate intake. Lowering your carbohydrate intake is a proactive way to help lower your blood sugar level.

Having diabetes is unarguably an inconvenience, but if you manage your diabetes properly you will still be able to “breathe in” and continue to enjoy life to the fullest. Do not hesitate to contact your doctor for additional diabetes testing info.

Diabetes is a critical condition, wherein the body either does not produce enough, or does not properly respond to, insulin. All of us know that insulin enables cells to absorb glucose in order to turn it into energy. Therefore, this causes glucose to accumulate in the blood. Many of a time, this leads to several complications. Hence, diabetes is said to be a life-threatening disease, which is commonly found in today’s world. A small wound can lead to death. Thus, keeping the diabetes normal is a crucial factor; a wrong decision in this regards may prove to be serious.

Many individuals tend to develop complications due to wrong use of medicines and medicare diabetic supplies. Therefore, medical experts suggest that diabetic cares should be deigned specifically for each patient. For being familiar to the sugar level, the diabetic patient is recommended to take full advantage of glucose meters – devices used to monitor glucose levels.

There are many companies that provide free diabetic supplies and free glucose meter for testing. Fortunately, now-a-days, Government also provides free diabetic supplies if anybody cannot afford to purchase them. There are also some insurance companies that offer the same so that the care is efficiently taken. As there is no miracle drug to totally cure diabetes at once, one can just keep it under control by imposing a regular check on it. A daily intake of medicines and diabetic recipes is highly advisable. Moreover, a regular monitoring of diabetes should be mandatory. However, the busy schedule doesn’t allow everyone to visit the doctor every time to get the sugar level tested. Therefore, the free glucose meter has evolved in the market.

There are several things you should take into consideration when it comes to using free glucose meter to check diabetes level. Below are certain important aspects mentioned that should be followed while using diabetic recipes:

1. Wash your hands with soap and warm water to keep the testing site clean. It also helps to expand the blood vessels in the fingers to increase blood flow.

2. Massage your finger downwards to the tip of your finger. This pushes blood towards the tip of your finger so that when it is pricked there is plenty of blood to flow out.

3. Set your pricking device. Pricking devices have different settings to pierce the skin at different depth.

4. Select the right glucose meter. Different blood glucose meter require different amount of blood to carry out a blood glucose testing.

5. Alternate your fingers every time. Don’t use the same finger over and over again.

It is also important to remember that diabetes supplies are subjected to expiry dates. Therefore, it is unwise to purchase large volume of diabetes supplies. This will not only be expensive but also prove to be dangerous to your health. In order to avoid the risk on health, it is advisable to look for a company that offers free diabetes supplies and information.

Following are some of the known herbal remedies that are reported to help in the natural management of diabetes.

Aloe Vera – The dried sap and gel taken from the inner portion of the leaves have been effective reducing blood glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin levels.

Banaba – Helps to lower blood sugar levels and assists with weight loss. Banaba is found in some of the better diabetes supplements. It is a plant that is native to Southern Asia.

Bitter Melon – Has long been used for it’s glucose lowering properties. It must be taken in small doses however, because larger doses can cause abdominal pain and diarrhea. It helps to increase the number of beta cells, which produce insulin. Bitter melon tea is still used in the Philippines today to help control blood sugar levels. Blood sugar levels should be closely monitored when using diabetes nutritional supplements that contain bitter melon, in order to avoid an unsafe drop in blood sugar.

Black Seed or Nigella Sativa extract – Can lower elevated blood sugar levels and increase antioxidant activity, possibly preventing the complications associated with uncontrolled type II diabetes.

Chromium – Helps the body’s cells properly respond to insulin. Chromium is an essential trace mineral that plays an important role in carbohydrate and fat metabolism and helps body cells properly respond to insulin. Studies have found low levels of chromium in people with diabetes. There are many promising studies suggesting chromium supplementation may be effective.

Cinnamon – A spice that is derived from the bark of the Cinnamon or Cassia tree. It can be used in cooking and can help to control blood glucose levels. Cinnamon bark makes fat cells more accessible to insulin. It blocks the formation of dangerous free radicals and increases the conversion rate of glucose to energy.

Fenugreek – stimulates insulin secretion from the pancreatic cells and helps lower your blood sugar levels.

Garlic – Can be beneficial in lowering blood glucose levels.

Ginkgo Biloba – Extract of leaves taken from the Ginkgo tree. This herbal treatment is noted for antioxidant qualities and improving blood circulation. This can aid or prevent complications such as diabetic neuropathy or diabetic retinopathy occurring.

Ginseng – An herb that can be added to cooking, taken as a supplement or tincture. It can help control blood sugar levels and lower blood pressure. It has long been used in the treatment of diabetes. It can increase the release of insulin from the pancreas and enhance the function of insulin receptors.

Gymnema Sylvestre – Helps the pancreas to produce insulin and help insulin to lower blood sugar levels in both type 1 and type 2 diabetics.

Indian Gooseberry – Helps to stimulate the pancreas, causing it to produce more insulin.

Indian Kino – Helps to regenerate beta cells and pancreatic islets cells which are responsible for producing insulin.

Magnesium – Can help regulate blood sugar levels. Magnesium can be found naturally in foods such as green leafy vegetables, nuts, whole grains and seeds. Low magnesium levels can increase diabetes symptoms.

Neem Tree – Reduces blood sugar levels.

Onions – Can be beneficial in lowering blood glucose levels. They can increase the production of insulin, which will lower high glucose levels in your blood.

Stevia – A shrub found in South and Central America – noted for it’s sweet taste. It is widely used as a sweetener alternative to sugar. It has little effect on the blood sugar level so is useful for controlling diabetes.

Turmeric – Is used in cooking, and is a member of the ginger family. It helps lower glucose levels.

Vanadium – is a trace mineral found naturally in soil and many foods. It is also produced during the burning of petroleum. Vanadium has been found to improve insulin sensitivity and reduce blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. It seems to mimic many of the actions of insulin in the body. You should not use vanadium without the supervision of a qualified health care practitioner because the dose needed to affect blood glucose levels can be potentially toxic.

Zinc – Aids in the production and storage of insulin. Zinc can be found naturally in foods such as oysters, ginger root, buckwheat, split peas, lima beans, almonds, walnuts, pecans, egg yolk, beef liver, sardines, almonds, lamb, and chicken.

If you decide to try any of the above herbal treatments, please remember to monitor your blood sugar frequently and be sure to keep your health care professional informed about what you are doing.

If you find the right herbal treatments for diabetes that works for you, prescription medication for your diabetes may become a thing of the past!

Diabetes is characterized by increased blood sugar levels, nerve function damage in the extremities and poor blood circulation. The condition predisposes to many other complications detrimental to a person’s health. Most common among those is foot injury complications or infection that often progress to gangrene which is the decay or death of body tissues. A diabetic has diminished sensation due to peripheral nerve damage. Because of that, injuries on feet are oftentimes not recognized, left untreated and has increased risk for developing infections.

When diabetics develop wounds on their feet, they are most often poor healing because of the lack of circulating blood on the area. Good circulation is needed to promote damaged tissue repairs, but the hardening and blockage of a diabetic’s arteries limits the transport of oxygen, blood and nutrients to where it is needed, leaving the wounds becoming gangrenous. Eventually, amputation would have to be performed to control its progression. For diabetics, special care for the feet is very pertinent.

There are special socks for diabetics intended to help protect their feet. Diabetic socks could come in many forms. Commonly, designs are seamless to avoid irritation and non-compression to prevent restriction. Along with poor circulation, blood pooling is another common concern for some diabetics. Diabetic compression socks are recommended for those with such problems. Compression socks for diabetics are constructed with a stronger elastic material to safely tighten on the lower leg areas, ankles and feet, promoting venous return.

They are constriction-free and specially-designed to deliver graduated compression (8-18 mmHg) to promote circulation. The type of compression it delivers is therapeutic, non-restrictive and actually improves blood flow while preventing blood from pooling on the wearer’s feet. Though different designs of socks for diabetics are manufactured to address different problems associated with the condition, diabetic compression socks have been proven to effectively improve circulation on the extremities while helping protect the feet.

Compression socks are available in a wide range of colors and styles, making them virtually indistinguishable from traditional socks. They are pretty affordable too.

I am a Type 2 Diabetic and have been trying to gain weight naturally. There are several challenges to this problem. Since most diabetics are trying to lose weight, I am in a minority. However, by following a program of proper diet and exercise, healthy results can be obtained. The first and most obvious thing when trying to gain weight is caloric intake. Very simply, if you take in too few calories or unhealthy ones you will simply not gain weight!

Also, it is important to know when, what, and how much to eat. Your body type also determines your caloric intake, as well as your metabolism. A Diabetic healthy diet can still provide results for those wishing to increase their weight and muscle mass. You need the right amount of protein, carbohydrates and fats for the best results, so consider a program that takes all of these nutritional factors into account. The second component of weight gain is exercise, beginning with weight training, which must be done correctly. If you don’t lift weights, the majority of any weight you gain will be fat.

However, in weight training you can also easily “overtrain”, destroying muscle in the process- if you work out too often, your muscles don’t have enough time to recuperate and grow. Also, cardiovascular exercise can actually prevent muscle growth if done improperly. You need to know the time, length and intensity of your workout for maximum results. A proper weight and cardiovascular workout program is truly essential for weight gain. The use of supplements is also questionable, because by consuming healthy calories you will be getting most of the vitamins and minerals your body needs.

You need to know which meal replacements work and which ones to avoid to save your money. In summary, a weight gain program can be implemented even if you’re diabetic- you need to follow a program that will educate you in nutrition, weight and cardiovascular exercise and use of supplements.

Treatment of hypoglycemia is not the mystery it once was because hypoglycemia is a more common problem for a lot of people in western countries than ever before. This is in the consequence of having a striking increase of diabetes patients in the population.

Dealing with hypoglycemia immediately after the original symptoms appear is extremely crucial to avoid anything more serious from happening.

A few of the initial signs of hypoglycemia are typically headaches, weakness, dizziness, nervousness, blurred vision and sweating. These symptoms can change from one person to another, a few patients can get terrible headaches while others will experience the weakness and sweating as the first signs. But what ever the symptoms may be, the crucial part is that the condition of the patient is looked at as quickly as possible.

Whether you have diabetes or not when you get hypoglycemia, the treatment is same for everybody. The best thing is that the treatment of hypoglycemia is very simple, all you have to do is eat or drink some carbohydrates. Orange juice and candy are the best options, since they are easily absorbed which is crucial to bring your blood sugar levels back up fast.

If no improvement is seen in about 15 minutes after taking the carbohydrates, then take some more. Hopefully after the symptoms have disappeared you might want to eat more carbohydrates just to top up your sugar levels.

If you do suspect hypoglycemia, it would be a good idea to visit your doctor so that the correct diagnosis can be made.

Everybody knows that eating fruits is essential to maintain good health and to prevent the occurrence of certain diseases. However, let’s not forget that fruits contain sugars, too; some have more sugar content than the others. Even though they may be in their natural state, sugars can still somehow result to elevated blood sugar levels. That is why if you are a diabetic you must know which fruits are best for you and which ones are not.

The recommended fruits for diabetics are those with high fiber content and low in sugar. Avocados are a good source of fiber, and they are low in fat, too, but then, they are rich in calories, so if you eat one large avocado in a day, you must be able to adjust your caloric intake for the rest of the day. Mangos, apples, and currants are also rich in fiber and their sugar content falls between low to medium high. Oranges and bananas are great for diabetics as they promote a stronger immune system and thereby aid in diabetic management.

Aside from fruits, diabetics will have better control of their diabetes when they include bitter and dark green vegetables in their diet. These have very high nutritional values so you don’t just get to regulate blood sugar levels, you are also keeping yourself generally healthy.

Keep in mind that while fruits and vegetables are essential in the control and management of diabetes, they must be coupled with the right attitude and appropriate exercise. Exercise, even if it is just a walk around the park, has a very significant role in controlling diabetes because it helps regulate blood sugar levels. Being in the proper frame of mind is also just as important so that you will not be easily tempted into eating foods that are known to cause a surge in blood sugar levels.

You can beat diabetes and its complications by eating the right kinds of fruits and vegetables in all the right amounts.

Do you know the exact normal range of blood sugar level? If no then proceed to have the answer.

Fasting blood sugar level should be between 70 mg/dl and 100 mg/dl. The blood sugar level must never be above 100 mg/dl. If the level is between 100 and 126 then it means the person is suffering from pre-diabetes. Any fasting level of glucose above 126 suggests the said person is either suffering from type 1, type 2 or gestational diabetes.

If your blood sugar level range is not less than 100 then you must start taking the following steps immediately. All those who are interested in having the normal blood sugar level or delay the onset of signs of diabetes must try the following.

Slowly lower down the intake of carbohydrates. It is strongly recommended that intake of carbohydrates must be lowered down slowly. It is good to have a list of allowed carbohydrates for diabetics. This list is helpful specifically for diabetics who want to take same amount of carbohydrates daily; this enables them to take the same amount of insulin daily.

Check the level of blood sugar often. It is recommended to test the blood sugar level daily at different time. These levels of glucose level help the person to understand whether the amount of insulin being consumed is correct or not. Regularly go for HbA1C. This blood test is important for controlling how well the person is managing his diabetes. The level must be under 6 %.

Pay close attention to the reaction time and mode of working of the insulin type you are using. Isobel is generally recommended to take at least 40 minutes before full meals. It needs a long reaction time. Humalog on the other hand is fast acting insulin. It is recommended to inject 5 minutes before meals. Consult your doctor and make sure that you are giving enough time to your insulin to work.

Substitute three larger meals with five or six smaller meals.

When self-monitoring of blood sugar levels was first introduced, health care practitioners believed glucometers would be useful to educate people with type 2 diabetes. How? Well they thought by type 2 diabetics checking their sugar levels after eating carbohydrate foods, or exercising, they would learn “a good pattern of behavior”. However, many studies have found this did not happen.

There appears to be a lot of controversy as to whether diabetics who self-monitor actually see an improvement in their glycemic control. Apparently many people check their levels three or four times a day but then make no changes in their eating plan when their results are abnormal. Many studies investigating the value of self monitoring of blood sugars in diabetics whose levels are controlled by diet or oral medications, have not shown that this testing leads to improved diabetic control.

As type 1 and type diabetes is a condition where the main problem is elevated blood sugar levels, it seems there is value in being able to measure your blood sugars and discover how it is best kept under control. One good reason to know your sugar level is under control is this: the connection between high blood sugar levels and those diabetic complications!

Research shows neuropathy appears to come about when your blood sugars remain over 140 mg/dl (7.8 mmol/l) for two hours or more… this is when you are at the pre-diabetic stage. Actually many type 2 diabetics at the time of diagnosis have detectable neuropathy… this is due to the fact most diabetics have had elevated blood sugars for ten years prior to diagnosis. The blood glucose reading to confirm a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes is 200 mg/dl (11.1 mmol/l).

What is your self monitored blood sugar target?

Many diabetics have the following target but check with your health care practitioner and discuss the best levels for you. Sometimes targets change as you mature or complications develop.

fasting BSL or pre-meal… between 90 and 130 mg/dl (5 and 7.2 mmol/l)

one or two hours following your meal… less than 180 mg/dl (10 mmol/l)

before going to bed… between 110 and 150 mg/dl (6.1 and 8.3 mmol/l)

Self monitoring gives you the ability to make choices about the foods you eat, and which physical exercise you should participate in to help lower your blood sugar levels. Always write your results in a logbook along with details of what you were doing at the time, for example swimming, hiking or drinking alcohol at a party.

When your health care practitioner schedules you for a fasting blood test, don’t forget to take your meter along and self test right before your blood is drawn so you can compare your reading with the laboratory results.

Tis the season! Christmas is right around the corner and the hustle and bustle of the season is upon us. Gifts are being bought and activities being planned. Involved with the activities is the menu planning. Every one seems to indulge in the quality and quantity of food available. But what if you are a diabetic? You really would like a peanut butter cup or two or maybe a couple of chocolates. But you know you can not indulge like all the other people, because of the sugar content in all those goodies. But wait. Sugar Free Sweets. Is there a possibility that maybe, just maybe, you can find some of these Sweets, other than mints and candies.

I hit the jackpot a couple of Christmases ago when I received a couple of Cheese Gift Baskets as gifts. They were from a company called Wisconsin Cheeseman. I really liked my Cheese Gift Baskets so I looked into this company. To my surprise the company offered a wide selection of Sugar Free Sweets. Not the candies either but a selection of dessert style Sugar Free Sweets.

I choose the Peppermint Patties and Peanut Butter Cups, both Sugar Free I got to say, I was impressed. The taste was authentic and I really could not tell the difference. I was so impressed that I had 5 of my friends and family members do a taste test. 2 Peppermint patties, side by side. One was a regular peppermint patty one was not. I asked them which one they thought was Sugar Free. They really could not tell and only one person was right. I now have 7 people on my Christmas gift list that have a package of Sugar Free Sweets delivered to their door about a week before Christmas. Not only is this a healthier choice, but everybody likes to get a package delivered to them that they do not know what it is or who its from. It’s kind of like the Christmas morning effect, days before Christmas and in the middle of the day. It will add to the overall excitement of their Christmas experience.

For me, the convenience of getting these Sugar Free Sweets online and not having to go store to store to find whatever is available is great. The quality is superb, the delivery great and the price more than fair. I now have Sugar Free Sweets in my cupboard 80% of the time and never had a complaint.
